Anyone have photos and / or advise on how they reinstalled their reversed firewall? My old one is Swiss cheese, I've got a good original replacement with all the holes, but On my cowl sides i can barely see the rivets to drill them out, I was thinking about replacing them with bolts so it can be removed, but haven't seen that done, and don't know what it looks like? Try searching here? Photbucket and red Xs might be all that's there now but there was a few good ones
spot welds not rivets and maybe some tack welds if it's been wacked before, mine was. Take your time drilling out what you can find and then knock a chisel or two in between there and that'll tell ya where ya missed. Drill that areaand keep going till it's out. Or that's how I did it.
Thanks all, I just don't want to tweak the sides of the cowl any more than necessary, but screw it, I can always hammer that too Sent from my KFGIWI using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The '30-'31 cowl gets narrower as it flows forward, so does the firewall, if you leave about a 1" strip of firewall spotwelded against the cowl skin it should fit well... [you can see the offset in your good firewall, measure it to see where the new one reverses best] If you replace it all, the wider edge wants to be where the skinny was... Drilling out the spotwelds is also a pain... I try and leave the toeboards alone and trim later if I have to... The firewall sticks forward of the cowl skin about 2"... If you cut it at the "cowl skin's edge/offset" it should buy you about 4" of extra engine room... Going to do it but not until I bolt things down... no pix till then... love the A's firewall beadwork...
Photobucket really messed with the Internet, didn't they? Here are some that I saved for reference for my coupe.
