Model A Roadster Gasser Pics ?

anyone have any model A roadster g***er pics to share? In the planning stages for my car and not sure whether to go with a low down look or possibly a nose high look. any pics greatly appreciated

 

Technically there weren't any roadster g***ers. Roadsters had their own cl***es. Street Roadsters is they had fenders. Mostly same rules as the g***ers, just no tops.

Altered cl***es if run without fenders.

Yeah, "roadster g***er" is sort of a contradiction in terms. The closest you'll see is altereds.

Why not use the stock height axle right at the start?
Just tell everyone it's set up to run in the Street Roadster cl***.

Depending on engine size, paint a number with an A/SR, B/SR or C/SR on each side's quarter panels or doors.

If you get tired of the look, you can always install a dropped axle and a posie's spring.
That'll get you down a little lower, 2 1/2" - 4" anyway.


The first pic shows the well known Hugh Tucker roadster that kicked *** in the A/SR cl*** and later on in the A/GSR (A Gas Supercharged Roadster) cl***.
Later on NHRA went to the double letter designation to indicate supercharged.
(As seen in the pic - 78 AA/SR.)

The car is a 32 Chevy, but it has the look.

The first pic shows the car when it ran a stroker Olds Rocket.
2nd pic is a later iteration when it ran Chrysler Hemi, also stroked I believe.
And for those who think 4-bars are non-trad, note the axle locating and control devices on the car.

The last pic shows what the car looked like when first run with a carbureted Olds.

Not many people realize it, but Tucker had a very nice custom 51 Ford coupe about the same time he got the roadster running.

It ran a built Caddy engine with six two bbls, 37 Cad-Lasalle floorbox, TJ T&R, lowered, rounded hood corners, rounded door corners, nosed and decked, I think a 54 Pontiac grille in a molded Merc grille shell.
I'm not sure about the taillights, the rear fender tops were molded in and I'm pretty sure the bumpers were smoothed and chromed.
Painted a non-metallic medium blue.
The door handles may have been removed as well.
It was well built in and out.

I got to ride in it one time, hauled *** pretty good, only bad part was the Caddy synchro's were so bad that speed shifting didn't work too well.

 

You might do a search for Frantic Fred Badburg he ran a model A roadster pickup in the '70 /drag racing Not a g***er but a b/fuel BF/MR .

What kind of wheels are those on the front of the Hugh Tucker roadster, what brand, id shure like to know.

 

My guess - considering the era - is that they are Halibrands.

I'm fairly sure Halibrand made a small window as well as a no-window wheel about that time.

The blown Olds iteration of the car ran about 1960-61 to about 1964-65.
Somewhere in there it got a Chrysler Hemi and finished out it's racing career Chrysler powered.

I'm not sure how long Tucker ran the car, last time I saw it was at March Meet 1965 and I'm pretty sure the Hemi was in it at that time.

By that time I was busy with my own stuff in C/Gas.
Funny coincidence here, yesterday I finished up repairing the first and last trophies I'd won with my Olds Rocket powered 50 Ford coupe.
The first from Santa Maria dragstrip and the last from San Fernando.


Tucker and son restored the car not too long ago and last I heard it was headed for the NHRA museum.

 

Maybe one of you old school pro's can tell me if the front wheels on the tucker roadster are Halibrands, what size do you think they were, ive been looking for a pair of them, I'm sorry about jumping in on your thread i know this is for pics.

 

I'm pretty certain they are small window Halibrands. Pretty hard to find and expensive these days.

Thanks for the pictures of Hugh Tucker's roadster. I remember reading about it in Hot Rod Magazine. I'm remembering it was said to be a '28 Chevy. But I'm over 40 and sometimes my memory strikes me stupid. This was a great car. Living in Arizona I never got to see it run in person. I wish I had had the opportunity to see it run.

In my eyes Tony's hot rod is the best of the drag race 29's. I got to see this car a few times and it always blows me a way. The details are perfect.

It very well could have been a 28.

When I first heard about it being built it was called a 32 and I thought he had a Deuce under construction.

It really is a well-done car and would stand up to anything built today as far as fit and finish goes.

If I remember right, Tucker was a machinist for Raytheon in Oxnard - a citrus/farming community south of Ventura which was an oil field/citrus community.
I think his dad may have been a machinist as well.

He had access to a lot of machines that other guys didn't have, but more importantly he had the smarts, skill and knowledge to put it all together.

The roadster's more than cool and as much of a roadster guy as I am, I sure wouldn't mind stumbling over his old 51 Shoebox custom.
He sold it to a guy named Chip who lived at the beach in Ventura.
Chip ran it for a while and then peddled it to an out-of-towner and I never saw it again.
Important part about the 51 was, unlike a lot of customs, it hauled ***.

Most customs and semi-customs in town didn't have a whole lot in the motor dept., but go to Long Beach or Van Nuys Blvd., run up against a custom in your hot rod and there was a good possibility you'd be looking at taillights....

Hope these pics work. They're of a friend's dad's 29. Raced successfully in Brainerd, MN and North Dakotas quarters. Went to Indy in 1968. Love that high front end. PM me for more high-res images. It went through like 4 variations with 12 spoke g***er wheels and pie crust rear tires.

 

Beatnick....It's neat to see a pic. on here of Dave Rudys red (Rudys Beauty)..It was also black at one time..I don't remember which award but Dave did win a top award at the Indy nationals in the late 60's..Also I use to see Dave run his roadster at the local Pences drag strip..(Piqua,Oh)..As Dave would be going down the !/4 mile it had a habit of the decklid flopping up in the breeze...Use to see A lot of top names at Pences..It's been shut down since about 1980 and made into a gravel pit..

Dave is still around and still playin' with cars...He does talk about building another roadster..He built a beautiful red 48 Desoto coupe with a viper engine that was featured in some of the mags the last two years..It has a lot of his engine turning like his roadster did...and his unbelievable craftmanship too!!

www.radirwheels.com used to have a really cool illustration of a full-fendered, nose-high roadster with a supercharged Hemi as their frontpiece. You can still see part of the car (it's blue) on their current website. My dad has the whole pic printed off on his office wall.

The rims on the Hugh Tuckers chev are indeed Halibrands and are more than likely 15x4 small window kidney bean style. Average price for said rims(a pair) are anywhere from 1200 bucks to 2 grand if ya can find someone to come off of them. Might be some better deals out there if your lucky but I ain't seen them. Good luck

 

I really like "Rudy's Beauty" I wondered if Dave was still around and searched online to see what else he had built, found the Desoto but wasn't sure if it was the same guy. Thanks for the info.

Regarding Hugh Tucker's 28 Chevy roadster and 49 Ford Olds powered club coupe, I'll be happy to clear up any questions after the 23rd. of June, I'll be with him between now and then and won't have access to a computer, save your questions.
