Model A roadster preference (28/29 vs. 30/31)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hillbillydeluxe, Jun 10, 2006.

  1. Between the Model A roadsters, what's your preference? Specifically, I'm talking about fenderless cars, either with or without hoods. I have some opinions on the aesthetics, but I thout I would toss it out to the group. Whaddya think? Does it even matter?

Any pics would be great, too.

  2. I have always favored the 28/29 A's because of the cowl shape and how they sit on Deuce rails. However, have seen some great Rods built from both. So, if you do it up right, either makes a wicked ride.

Just finish a 29 highboy on 32 rails---always liked the cowl better---and yea, 28/29 looks better on 32 frame--in my opinon.

I prefer 28/29 on deuce rails (hallock windshield)...... and 30/31 channeled (cut down stock w-shield). There are exceptions though...outstanding examples of both. That's just what I typically prefer.

  7. check out TRJ, #31 (i think that's the right issue) there's a bare metal roadster in progress in there that is absolutely beautiful.. i think a good percentage is reproduction, but that doesn't take away from it's looks in my opinion. I want to base mine on it.

Don't think you can go wrong with anything from 28-31 but put me down for the 30-31 because of a few minor differences, like the 30-31 having the reveal around the wheel well area ,similar to the 32, The 28-9 seems a little slab sided to me, also the 30-31 doors have a nice swoop on the top. but i'm probably in the minority because it seems like you see alot more 28-29s....

  9. You and me both. I like the 30/31's shape in the cowl area much better and the trunk/decklid seems smoother without the "corner" as on a 29 sideview. The 28/29s look broken, or pieced together at the cowl point too.

But there do seem to be a lot more 28/29s than the 30/31s.

Nice 29s though, guys. How much room do you have in those 29s for a 6-foot guy?

i could live with either one if i could find one.
even a coupe would suit me fine.
OR even a 2 door sedan.

Right on. Couldn't agree more. (All model A's done right kick *** though!) :D

  14. The answer is usually self-evident when you hit one of the big hot rod bashes.
    Especially where roadsters are concerned.
Lots of 28-29's and not too many 30-31's.

I like the 30-31 roadster's on Deuce rails and am building one highboy style.

That said, here's a pic of a great little 29 seen at the 2003 March Meet.

To me, the 29 roadster's look great when the hood is lengthened a bit.
Most times about four inches of hood length is picked up when a Deuce frame is used and the rear wheel well of the 29 fits about where the 32 wheel well fits on the 32 frame.

One question I do have, hows come all the 28's done up highboy style are called 29's?

The 30-31 gang doesn't seem to have any problems calling their car a 30 or a 31.

Perhaps it's that magic sound and the picture within your mind that comes to the fore when 29 is spoken.
Part of the language in the hot rod world I guess.

  17. Would it also be fair to say that the fendrless 28/29 favors a postwar rod look, while the 30/31 fits easier with a late 50s-60s vibe (imagine Radirs on a 30 roadster). I can't summon up any images, just going from memory.

I would have to say the 30-31 on 32 rails is one of the most beautiful cars around, that's why that's going to be my next ride.
