OK, I 've been lurking out there for a year or so and have helped myself to some of your wisdom and technical advice. I have a question regarding my AV8 coupe: What is involved with switching the rumble lid to a trunk lid? I see the lid is set up already to receive the support bracket/hardware and it appears to be set to take the pivot pins at the top. Can someone tell me how the pivot hardware mounts (I see the kits you mentioned in an earlier post)--do the pins mount into the body or do the pins mount on the deck lid? What needs to be done to the rumble lid to accept the lock? Is it just a hole on the outside of the lid skin? Also what is needed to have the lock catch something at the botton and latch? Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance for your help! I've been scratch building this project for almost 3 years and I'm getting a bit closer to having this out on the road this summer thinking a trunk may be more useful! Pete
My 31 coupe was origiolly a trunk converted to rumble. They installed the rumble hinges on the regular decklid. However, my car has no rumble springs, fender pad (my car is fenderless anyway) bumper bracket pad ( no bumper either) or working latch. Also no stop from keeping the trunk lid from hitting the lower panel. My coupe was off the road since the 40's till I got it on the road. The pivot is just a bolt on my ride
http://home.comcast.net/~68c/Rumblelid.htm There is a lot of information and misinformation out there on model a rumble and trunk lids. I have been doing a lot of research on these as I figure out what I have and need for my 29 roadster. This website has a lot of good info. I'll see what else I can dig up from my research.
As far as the lid goes, the handle hole needs to be redrilled and the old one filled. The inner panel below the lid will need to be changed as well. What you have: What you need: Pictures are from Snyders website. http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/ You will need to swap from rumble hinges to trunk hinges. Let me see if I can think of anything else.
I'd love to see detailed photos of the tin installed below the deck lid on a trunk car. I've got all the factory parts except that piece that connects the inner panel to the rear outer panel.
Carter, Thanks, I also need to know how the hinge pin set up works at the top when I convert to trunk--I can't tell from the pics in the catalogs if the pins are mounted on the body or on the deck lid.
Everything I have is for 28/9 roadster with a rumble lid, so I don't have any pics of the 30/31 trunk stuff. Just though I'd pass along what little info I've found.
Check out this link 37Kid. See if it has what you need. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/trunkconstruction.htm
THANKS! first time i've ever seen a photo of the pieces I need, the "Rear Tire support bracket". wonder if someone is repoping that piece. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/trunkconstruction.htm
Snyders parts #A163S Goes behind the panel below the deck lid and gives support for bolting the rear mount spare tire on to the body. Trunk applications. Can be shortened to work on 28-29's. U.S.A. Part # A1401 For the Coupes and Roadsters with a rear mounted spare tire. This bracket follows the contour of the curved inner panel, and the top bolt on the carrier goes through the hole in the end. Only for cars with deck lids hinged for rumble seats. U.S.A. Is one of these what you need?
Pete, in looking at Snyders hinges, looks like there is a part that bolts to lid and a part that bolts to the body.
I need the side to side piece that allows you to attach the inner to the outer panel, it is black if you click on that Model A garage website link.
My reproduction 28/9 panel from snyders had the inner piece that runs side to side as part of the panel. EDIT: Oops, nevermind, I see what you are looking for now.
