The original saddle tanks that were marketed back in the 70s used the cowl top filler and had a tube running to each tank inside the cowl and floor to the tanks. It was changed to the through the apron tanks for safety reasons as well as cost.

Here's one. It's an ATL fuel cell/bladder with a cage around it. It has about 4"-5" of clearance to the rear sheet metal in case of a rear-ender.

pasadenahotrod, thanks for the info. i will look into the older conversions. i guess i should have mentioned i am running '32 rails (didn't want to thread-jack anymore than i already did). do you happen to remember what the safety issues were? was it vent lines and fumes in the passenger compartment? thanks again.

Here's what I'm doing on my T roadster. Cobbled-up a 90-degree turn out of exhaust pipe. Using a race-type cap. Tying it all together with 6" of 2" ID gas fill hose.

If you don't like the boat fillers that say gas on them, get a filler cap that says "waste" on it....that'll keep them scratching their heads!

  11. In the sixties, I had a 29 Tudor with a thin conventional gas tank, maybe early 50's Mercury, and had a modified taillight stem with the filler running through it. Photo shows my fingers on the cap. I was 17 or 18, back in 1964

Another option is to center the filler in the back of the body, as low as possible, and hide it with a spring loaded, hinged, license plate holder.
I used the saddle tanks on an A in the 1990s, never again. Always down on my knee to fill a tank, then do the same on the other side.
