I've got a Model A hot rod. Running a 39 ford trans with enclosed driveshaft/torque tube from a 40 ford. I've got a stock model A speedo (the oval one). I'm looking for a speedo cable. I had boughten supposedly a generic one. It does screw into both the torque tube and speedo just fine, however the cable itself won't go into the speedo.

Anybody know of a speedo cable that will work with my combination ?

Look and see if there is a piece of the old cable broke off in the speedo head. Would not a first.

I agree with JohnEvans let us know how it turns out. Is your cable square and does it go into the sender OK.

There I think 2 different Model A speedo cables and different speedo drives for the torque tube.
Mac's or Snyders web sites will show it all,I had the same problem but can't remember exactly how I fixed it.

Yes, years please. Two entirely different generations of Model A. Is speedo round or oval?

The speedo cable isn't broke off inside the speedo. The model A speedo I have is oval. The cable itself threads onto the speedo just fine. the inside of the speedo cable is square.

I just pulled to speedo off to double check and make sure there isn't a speedo cable end broke off inside of it. There isn't. However I think I discovered the problem. I slid the inside cable out from the outer cable and pushed it into the back of the speedo. Being it was not in the gear on the torque tube anymore it spun freely. It spun just as freely when pushed into the back of the speedo. My thought is that the speedo cable square end is smaller then whats in the speedo so it free wheels. The square end on the speedo cable is approx 1/16". Can anybody confirm I either have the right or wrong cable ?

Oval speedo uses a different cable...round speedo uses same size stuff as '39. The early cable should have a sort of key rather than a square end...you might well be able to bolt in a repro early cable ( http://brattons.com/prodtype.asp?PT...on=11&ph=cat&strKeywords=&&strSearchCriteria= ).
Another route might be to remove the end from old original cable, drill out the cable bits, and solder/crimp it onto your square tip cable.

  9. Very early oval speedos had a different fitting and have their own special cable, later oval ones just use a normal Model A cable. Look in the Macs catalog online and you'll see.

I just called Mac's, first I talked to someone in sales and they told me "<TABLE class=table-product cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 width="90%"><TBODY><TR><TD align=left></TD><TD align=left>"A17260A " would work. However they did transfer me over to "tech support" just to verify it and they told me it won't work. Tech support told me they don't have a cable that will work and they don't know where to look. Surely someone else has the same setup I have that found a cable to works. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

If the speedo head has a round hole with a slot on one side of the hole you need a tip with a ear [tang]. A speedo shop the builds cables should be able to fix you up. By the way the square end normaly measures right at .104.
