I've been going back and forth whether to use my Model A spindles or get some beefier late 30's spindles. I'm going to be running a stock flathead V8 in my '31 coupe. Obviously beefier is better but have any of you heard of the Model A's breaking or anything like that? Same with the A radius rods? I'm basically looking to save a few bucks and run what I brung but if the A's are too weak, then those few bucks won't help when a wheel falls off going down the road. Input would be appreciated.
Flange and actual spindle bearings go on are same as V8 '32-35, only differ from '37-48 in having 1/2" longer spindle and fractionally smaller bolt pattern. Bearings are same '28-48, brakes for later spindles easily adapt to '28-35 spindles. Weakest feature is the possibility of the separate steering arms ruining their mounting tapers, which happened only if they were run with fastener loose. Steering balls on said arms are often badly worn, but Model A parts places will re-ball the things for you. I don't think you need to fear A spindles at all. Streetrodders have been carefully taught that only '37-41 spindles can be used, because those are supplied by streetrod parts places. Actual car parts aren't used on streetrods, as they are often dirty.
