Ok, here's the deal...I have a boxed stock frame with vega steering in my 28. I would like to have a column that is narrow, but a tilt that would be fairly easy to install without alot of mods to it. gonna run floor shift and don't really car where the key is. Anyone got some good ideas? Pics of how you did yours would be appreciated. Also, what is the most angle per u-joint can you run? Thanks...Scott

  2. My friend stuck a FoMoCo column from a late 60's or early 70's Merc into his 38 Morris - looks like an Anglia.

As I remember it, it did not have the column shift, but did have the key on the column.
It's smaller in diameter and to my eyes better looking than the GM column.

It was a tilt as well.

When I built my 28 used a column out of a citation, cable shift and all. Nice short shaft and you can cut the shifter off if you want floor shift. Oh and used a vega box.

hey scott, on my 30 A coupe i used the gm column and it worked fine. i found one that didn't have the shifter but it had the turn signals, 4-ways and tilt with a key switch and the key. the key switch was acting funky so i opted for a dash mounted key switch. the column is mounted using a welded in bracket at the firewall with a U-bolt to hold it in place. i made my own hanger for under the dash and it too utilizes a U-bolt to secure it. it all works fine. here are a couple pics if you need a visual. mike

scott, actually i wished i would have installed the column so the wheel was a little higher, or closer to the driver. i will probably change that as a winter project at some point, as for now i'm drivin' the shit out of it. mike
