I am 20 years old and im really big into older cars. anyways I found a model a that I want to get but it doesn't have a ***le how do I go about getting a ***le? I live in Illinois

  2. A lot of prayer and sacrifice?

IL is a bonded ***le state but they're not particularly easy. I'd start by getting the serial off the Model A frame and have it run and see if it's clear.

If it's clear, you should be able to put up a bond against the car that if after a few years no one claims it's theirs you get a clean ***le in your name.

But, IL is greedy and may hit you for a high sales tax regardless what you paid for the car, and no two DMV offices will give you the same answers when it comes to getting the job done. It may be more of a pain than it's worth for a young guy to deal with.

Make sure you have a signed and notarized bill of sale from the seller, with all the details of the car's VIN and purchase date on it. Sale price on there too. Whatever legal method you use to get the ***le will require this as a first step.

I would suggest checking with the Illinois DMV and get the correct information from them as to what you need to do. HRP

Some swap meets have " collectible ***les" for sale........... You may find a "collectible" that will fit the characteristics of your model A.

Don't do this, especially in Illinois.

  7. +10 on not doing this in IL. IL is one of the more difficult states to work with for ***les, if you search the board (little box at top right) you can probably find some of the horror stories people have shared.

Good advice there! do the homework first and then decide if it is the one to buy.

If it is a project car I'd take a batch of photos of it right where it was sitting when I picked it up that showed it's condition as purchased along with having the Notarized bill of sale and a copy of the Craigslist add that it was for sale in or a copy of the Ebay "you won" email if you bought it that way. Little details like that save your bacon and spare change when it comes time to ***le it.

There is plenty of info on how to find the vin on Model A Fords here on the Hamb and all over the net to take care of that detail.

Yup, and that is a felony. And prosecution does indeed happen, and is happening near by me, as we speak. Your mileage may vary con getting caught, prosecuted, and convicted as a felon, but do you want to go down that road? I hear that meaningful, rewarding work can be difficult to come by for a convicted felon.

Questions are fine. Suggesting, promoting, or advocating the violation of the law, is not.

Running without fenders is one thing, felonies are something else entirely.

Suggesting, promoting, or advocating the violation of the law reflects poorly on this board, this community, and my profession. It will do noting good for any of us, in the long run.

Do you have a relative in a neighboring state where it is easier to ***le, and can use their address for now? I ***led a 56 Chevy in Illinois that had an existing Indiana ***le and it was a BREEZE. No questions asked. I did it at the DMV in the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago though. They're notorious for doing as little as possible.

Pretty obvious why, so don't ask because you will get no correct answers.................SO don't ask or go there.

Contact you states DMV department and ask them what you should do
    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I have posted this before, but it seems no one ever does a search. Every concievable problem has been covered for just about all states, a thread ***le search with (***le) in it will give one pages of threads, with many conflicting answers. The only place one should be asking questions at is their local DMV, what members here say makes no differance, DMV is the final say so.

Don't do it in Ohio either. A "friend" ended up being questioned for several hours by the state police after buying a ***le from a Hemming's ad. the only thing that saved him was that he had a signed bill of sale for the car.He never did get it registered in Ohio.

  15. What is the whole story? It could be easy if the previous owner had it transferred into his name and just lost the ***le, have him apply for a duplicate (you can probably do it at the same time you process the registration). It could be impossible if the car was stolen. What is the whole story?
