A few things to offer... First, coil overs belong on a street rod, not a hot rod. Flathead, wire wheels, bias plies, etc. do not play well (visually) with coil overs. Go with a transverse rear spring. Second, I personally prefer a triangulated four link over the choices you listed. They tend to work well with coil overs (I know!) but work well with any other suspension type too. They hide away nicely and are not readily visible. Since you're running split bones up front you'd ideally want split bones out back, or not have anything too visible. Also, no panhard bar is needed. As a second choice to the triangulated four link I'd choose the ladder bars. The ones from @3kross look killer. P&J are always nice. No on the four bar. Doesn't work with the rest of the style at all. Put that weight back on that drum mister! Wheel spacers can be dangerous. Avoid them if at all possible. I don't have a solution for this dilemma, sorry. Personally I'd find some '40 Ford 16" steelies if the solution isn't easily obtainable. One of the big keys to proper handling is to have an imaginary line through the kingpin to the ground. The tire should be centered where that location is. Wheel spacers push the tire outside of that realm and can cause weird issues.
Ive got 4 16x4 40 ford {kelsey hayes] wheels in excellent shape taking up space if your interested.Bolt pattern 5 on 5 1/2.
Thanks for all the replies fellas... Will go with P and J's ladder bars per Daddio... And back to the buggy spring. Will continue with my current front end/wheel set up (but understand the handling risks) as I love those finned drums and have a lot of history with those rims... Frdsuperduty: thanks for the kind offer, Eric they're all urs... Whisky is back!
So just to clarify... The only part I need is the P&J ladder bar kit and nothing else?? What about panhard bar? Every book I read says yes...plus I am putting one on front. Whisky is back!
Time to finish the bones... Edges flushed, and chamfered... Bung fitment... Seems snug. Whisky is back!
Jigged up... Tacked... Wow! Haven't welded in a bit! Hard to ground this old metal Nice tack weld Whisky is back!
Need to change out tungsten... #8 cup Just used grips to flip the tungsten as I always sharpen both ends for double duty! gas lens is the best set up! Whisky is back!
Next bone... All welded up! Not bad for 6 months of inactivity... tie rod grease zerk is 9/32" Whisky is back!
Well, attempt number three while I'm swearing like a sailor. Guess I'll copy my reply this time before submitting and having the app tell me "You don't have permission..." Ugh. I don't know what P&J includes so I don't know if you'll need anything else. Some will argue that Henry Ford didn't use a panhard bar, but today's tires and driving habits put a lot more lateral stress on a car than 81 years ago. Always err on the side of safety, you can never overbuild in areas like suspension, steering or brakes. So yes, I'd recommend a panhard bar.
Assembly off front end... Spring pack attached... Front end on front x-member rear view of an almost roller... Whisky is back!
Thanks man... Question on the front end... How much will the driveline/body wt drop the front end? It still seems high? Whisky is back!
Coolio... I'm gonna take some leafs out to decease ride height another inch... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Remember when you remove leaves you also reduce spring rate. In other words the spring can't hold the load it could before. Although it's common, use common sense. Removing every other leaf, starting with the shortest, works fairly well.
Okay guys ordered my spacers from Ralley America... and ladder bars from Pand J's... Just waiting now... May start welding up the trans x-member, but want to get the front end together to drop in the driveline etc... In the meantime will measure for my tie rods, and steering linkage... Prolly go with a Vega box.
This is the kit I will go with... Unless there is summit better out there??? Also I assume it mounts to a specific frame area???
Looking to start the rear end assy... Waiting on the front spacers... Courtesy of P and J my favorite rod shop by far! I just still cannot believe the service! Whisky is back!
Had some time to throw this together real quick... Went fairly smooth Other side wanna see how this works with my homemade x- member Center mount point... Whisky is back!
Ok so got a little test fitting done... Lined up the rear end... wheels off... getting a basic idea sits roughly 6" on each side Whisky is back!
Per instructions I need to be 4" below my rear cross member, and 1/4" fore of the center line... Looks good... about 4 deg Side view back view Whisky is back!
Better view of axle height... rear spring mount hangers removed hack sawed looks like a frog! Ribbet... nice quality steel rings split Whisky is back!
