Ok Hambsters, I am getting ready to put an interior in my 1930 5 window model A coupe. I need ideas on everything from framing, insulating, headlining to the final pretty work of covering. Lets hear those ideas and post those interior photos of any late 20's and early 30's coupes!
Have been using Pontiac Fiero buckets but look like s--t and cant see out the back window. Will be moving to traditional bench style.
I got seats in my ride, never really needed them.... But i guess with a sled, you need umm... When i get my "a" sedan ,, you'll know what ill be riding on
Hey Bustingear, What part of town are you in? You should come by My shop sometime and hang out .... some of the local guys come by on tues nights and sometimes work on our cars, do a little show and tell with parts we bought or stuff we worked on over the weekend or just BS......... Anyway ........... I see a Old school interior in your ride..... all red tuck and roll.....sweet
Fiero buckets are cool. Cut off the headrests with the speakers in 'em and get rid of the original seat legs. Make the seat legs as low as you need 'em to see out of the front and back windows. Thats what I did and they are very...very comfortable. I'm an old guy and can drive 5-6 hundred miles a day sitting in them and never have a ache or pain. I like that mine will lay all the way back for a nap. Try that with an s-10 seat!!! Tuck and roll is nice with a design in the door panels and seats. I also did the headliner in t&r. Look at some of the older car mags and get some ideas. Also any pics you have of traditional cars.
[ QUOTE ] MILK CARTONS!! [/ QUOTE ] first time I drove my '35 Dodge I had taken the seat out and had put an old milk crate in it for a seat. I was about forteen and a half and was doing pretty good driving up and down the old dirt driveway, about a hundred feet up and then back. I was feeling braver with every pass and after three or four times up the drive I thought I'd chance taking it out on the road, just around the corner and right back! coming out of the drive I hit a bump and almost lost it with the crate bouncing all over, I came up to the corner at about twenty and as I came around the crate tipped over and I was sitting on the floor! I still had my hands on the wheel and I could feel the gravel shoulder as I whipped it back and forth watching the telephone poles and powerlines through the open top, of course you can't work the pedals when your crawling around on the floor with your hands on the wheel so the car was gunning along almost totaly on it's own! somehow I got it under control and off to the side, put the crate back in place, turned the car around crept home at about two miles an hour. I HAD DRIVEN ON THE STREET!! I was like a grown up!
Bustingear, I used the middle bench seat out of a 86-88 dodge caravan in 31 Ford coupe with 3 inch top chop it was brown with square tuck pattern dyed it black fit good and I am 6 feet tall. I used the slide rails of a bucket seat. Worked great!
anyone using low back early VW bug/squareback seats. I was thinking of using those in my sedan if I could find a set..
Insulation makes a big difference in comfort. I used the aluminum with plastic bubble sheet stuff on my truck, and it made a world of difference in both comfort (temperature) and noise. Stereo sounds a ton better, too. Bought the stuff at the building supply store, big rolls for pretty cheap.
this may be stupid but its an idea I've been kicking around, how about the small plastic boat / fishing seats??
[ QUOTE ] this may be stupid but its an idea I've been kicking around, how about the small plastic boat / fishing seats?? [/ QUOTE ] Dan, a fellow I know used them in his "T." He says that on a long trip with the seat(s) tipped back a bit to get the right angle, (they are not adjustable) the front edge of the seats cut off the circulation in his legs. After the first long trip, he stepped out of the car, and fell flat on his face! They are not upholstered. The other problem, at least with his (short back seat), is there is little or no back support and he said his back and shoulders get very tired on a long haul.
The center caravan seats are the way to go. I am 6'2" and it leaves plenty of headroom, and my top is chopped 4" and the body is channeled 3". I mounted the seat directly on the floor, without using seat tracks. I sure beats the hell out of the sunchicken seats that were in the car. I picked the seat up at the local junk yard for $25.00. Good Luck -Joe
How about some pics and how tos on installing interior panels? What did you use as the inner structure, panels and how did they fasten in?
I have yet to put interior in my A coupe but I helped a buddy put some interior panels in his ride. We used 3/16 in. (or there abouts) masonite wood. It's cheap, bends nicely and paintable. You can also use spray adhesive to wrap some vinyl around it. If I ever put interior in, I will probably use it. We just used screws to instal it. There is a huge variety of screws to choose from, some with caps, some with the interoir washers. Use your imagination.
