Are there any Model A sedans out there that run fenders without the aprons? Moving their boards up and placing them right up to the bottom of the door? (Or maybe up to their 32 rails?) It would seem with all the channeling and tranny tunnels being built that someone would have tried it. I think it could be a clean look. I want to be low and keep the fenders.
I photoshopped VonRiggFink's awesome ride, and kind of liked the low center of gravity it had.

Thoughts? Can it be done, with the frame Z'd and a transmission tunnel?

    Wow dude..thats different..
i dont care for the rubber band tire looking one.

at one point i was contemplating something along these lines for this build, but than decided against it..
    interesting look ,heavy channel

there is a 30 -31 i think? out there ive seen pictures of it..he did something simular to this, it was a dark green in color

i think its a hard look to pull off right, but it obviously can be done

Yeah I could take some measurements and see what I'd be working with. As mine sits I still have a lot of head room, I could probably bring the floor up 3" more and still be ok. My seat set up might be the difference maker. Thanks for posting the picture thats exactly what I wanted to see. I like the idea of a Model A being able to take some turns and have some performance to it. So thats where I was going with this.

i think those aprons are around 6" or more in height from the running board to where they meet the frame..thats one hell of a chanel..and with any chop your seats better be on the floor or your head will stick out the roof,or hitting it on every bump. And your legs will be straight out in front of you..

maybe there is a good middle of the road..still think it looks cool, just not for me

You wouldn't gain as much drop, but it might be a pretty cool idea to section a set of aprons so that to the untrained eye you still retain the stock appearance. Maybe take a couple three inches out of them? Any one wanna photoshop that one?

Yeah the aprons definitely hang past my tranny, oil pan, etc. So there's room to section them like you said. I guess picture something like the below, but with running boards and fenders attatched. How much room and what kind of set up does something like this have?

hope your short..like 5'..or you have a very short torso..or dont mind riding around looking like the neighbors labrador:D..you know Rat Fink Style:cool:

Im not a tall guy but at 5'10" or 11" with the normal seating in my car my head isnt much more than 5" to the top..and i like to wear my Billy Jack hats (as Danimal calls me)I wouldnt want my seats flat on the floor..bad lower back and knees..and im old:mad:..and dont want to put myself thru a bad experiance on any ride of length and be sore as hell when i get there just to look cool..
I did enough of looking cool when i was younger..now i decided i just want to be cool and screw the looking part:D

That part isnt working out like i planned either:eek:

I still say it looks bad ass, and if built right and the proportions are right..it would be killer..but in my case it would be killin me..

    Do it man..do it...show us..

I never saw anywhere what your paint plans were. Can you fill me in?

  13. Fenders without aprons is way better than aprons without fenders! That has been popping up lately; if you check out the old dry lake photos, it was done back in the day, not for looks(yuck), but because the fenders came off easily, the aprons required removing the body from the frame.

In the Photoshop to end all photoshop thread there is a shot that James D did of mine in dark green with black fenders..
The green is a bit off from what i want, but greens are funny, and hard to get right to the eye (at least thats been my experiance)

im still playing with the ideas, my engine and rear axle plus some other suspension parts are painted that one yeaar firebird green think its 1968 color im looking for another shade of green that compliments it, or i might choose that color to do the body in..i cant make up my mind yet

    I like it. But...

I'd move extend the frame / front axle a little more forward so the wheels are centered better under the front fenders. I realize this is a photo shop adjustment in your pix, but there is nothing stranger looking than front wheels too far back on a full fendered car.

You might even consider a longer stretch in the front frame, giving a swoopier hood / front end in general. From the windshield back, the car looks very low and cool. But to me nose seems a little blunted in comparision.

Raise and shorten the headers... you will have trouble clearing the fenders with those in the photo and not be able to open your doors fully. Be sure to use straps on the doors, too, or you will probably end up with half-moon shaped header marks in your doors after opening them on a windy day.

Lastly, if you are an expert body man, consider longer doors. Moving the B pillar back will make it look better, give you easier access, and (a real gripe for me) move the B piller behind your head and out of your line of sight. A lot of hot rods with set back seats end up putting your head parallel to the B pillar. I know, my 37 was that way. Hated it. Visioin is crappy and if you ever get in an accident, it makes a nice place to smack your head on. Makes it easier to install shoulder belts, too, when behind the seat backs.

As for the questions you really wanted answered, keep the tunnel as narrow as possible, perhaps to the point of having a two-part driveshaft with a fixed support bearing in the frame some place behind the front seats. These cars are very narrow stock and a fat and high tunnel will just kill any space for good seats.

Hope this helps. If not, you can always ignore me! Gary

    Forgot to ask,

Are the rear wheels / fenders moved back? Will the rear of the body be sedan like, curving in towards the diff, or more Vicky like, sloping back? You might consider the Vicky idea as a way to help finish off the inside of the rear fenders a little easier.
