Technical Model T axle modification for lowering...

Hey guys... A friend of mine ask about if I saw over The Hamb a modification like the picture below... for lowering a model T banger...
That the plans for his build!! The idea!!

Does he plan to do a traditional drop or fab that and do a lot of welding? Either way it looks too drastic. Bob

Completely bolt on... Made of a solid bar... Ok may be my Friend is a little anxious with this build!

That drop puts a lot of leverage on the stock parts. It might be ok for a parade car but hitting a pothole at any speed would concern me.

 

Just say NO!

 

WOW that is thinking out of the box. Not sure how safe it is but wow.

 

Glad I'll never be on the same roads as that. That looks Friday the 13th scary.

 

Somewhere on here is a thread about building a Model T dropped axle from two axles. Or have Sids drop it. Either way, leave that half *** fabricated **** for garden carts.

I wouldn't do it, I think this is a better option.

 

Somewhere lost in the HAMB is a thread on dropping a T axle 1920's style. They used a set of brackets that located the spring behind the perch with a significant drop. Maybe an internet search is in order.

I believe the Frontenac cars had these bronze brackets.

With that much hokey drop on that axle , I would be worried that the end would break off or the spindly wishbone would bend. Either one causing a bad incident and maybe ruining peoples day for a long time. I would just have SID drop your axle and beef up the wishbone, safest bet. Mitch

Many thanks for the replies, my friend was advised... Tomorrow he planned to take a ride for testing... He made it some lowering brackets or support for the rear...

You could use a lowering bracket , I have this one that’s extra from a project that I would sell

I must ask WHY would you bother, when there are so many other tried and proven solutions out there for lowering...

 

I'm surprised no one has mentioned '27 spindles. They are 1" lower than previous year T spindles. I used a 3" dropped axle, reversed eye spring, and '27 spindles to lower my speedster 5" in front.

 

Chevy spindles offer more of a drop than later ford. On mine I fabricated brackets similar to the laurel pictured. Rather than relocating the perch, a rear perch is mounted into the bracket. I don't have a clear picture of mine right now but this will give you an idea. I have 27 spindles and a late spring so I could lower it more just by using some chevy spindles and an inverted eye if I want. Of course I could also still swap out the axle for more if needed but feel I am about "right" on the other side I could go earlier spring ot earlier spindles to bring it up.
