i am looking for a firewall for this car it is a 26/27 T coupe I believe but I am not positive, the pic with the tape in it is how wide the opening is for the firewall , all of them I find are around 3 inches plus shorter. Any help is greatly appreciated
The '26-'27 Coupe fire wall does not go all of the way to the bottom. There is a gap. As for width, can you take another pic to show how and what you are measuring? You might have to make one to fit or find an original fire wall because no one makes them that I know of. They are only rivited in some spots and also have bend clips to hold them in. I would suggest going to ebay and look for a seller named "gunman63". He deals with model t cars and sells a lot of '26-'27 model t coupes.. You can also check with "Model T Haven" and the Model T Ford Forum. Sent from my SM-G930T using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
This is a roadster, but the firewall is the same. You can see how it does not go all the way down: Here is the same body, with a floor installed:
I'm guessing a 1927 going by the lack of metal trim around the rear window opening. From what I have read the 26 had a full metal internal trim around the inside of the rear window and due to economy cut backs/cost savings, Ford decided to use wood instead which in most cases has rotted away or fallen out. I have both years here at home and really like the metal trim which also can be found around the quarter windows on the inside. I have made up some mall sections and hope to replicate this trim in my 27 as it stiffens up the panels as well.
Are the ones you have found flat? Not completely flat, but not with the projection sticking out on top as in gimpy’s picture? If flat could they be for a ‘23-‘25 body, those have a narrower hood and the cowl has a much different appearance. You might want to take Flathead Dave’s advice and make one, at the very least the stock f/w might interfere with your distributor.
There are aftermarket ones, if you want to drop the cash. Howell's has three different models to choose from. If you choose to go with them, buy through eBay, not their website.
allegedly the frame is original to the car but has been boxed part way, and cut in the rear, I am hoping to get a firewall or a new firewall to put in and get body squared away correctly before I go on with it. Then I can correct and build as I go with a square body and not have to worry so much on the body dimensions
Before you go ahead with a firewall, you may want to check all your options. This is only a suggestion and is what I'd be doing given my time over. Take a look at a 1925 T firewall, I've attached a pic and see one if you like the look and two if it will go close to fitting. I'm sure there are guys out there who can possibly confirm or otherwise whether the 25 firewall could work. I like'm that much that I'd make it work on my next project.
I think these are why I am having problems haha. I mean that by I have been looking around and the measurement in the pic is where I measured my opening at (roughly), I think my ultimate goal is to get the firewall to look correct like Ford built it around the area where the hood and hood sides meet up. Do you know of a later car with this firewall installed? I would like to see a pic if possible.
Personally, I think these 1925 firewalls look more hot rod, if there is such an expression. I think we will need to ask the audience regarding seeing one installed in a car, but they are out there, when I saw one a few years back, I was sold on the idea and it seems to be more friendly for the tranny etc. I think you may have to pay a few $'s more but I'd say it would be worth it.
The shape of the stock 26-7 firewall is much more rounded on top than the 25 and earlier firewall. Won't fit. Here is the ad with the 26-7 firewall for sale: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/misc-parts-model-t-model-a-37-ford-etc.1042332/
Here's a picture of a late T body that had an earlier firewall installed into it, required a pretty big filler panel in the center. It kinda works, but if you're doing this to get the stock proportions and measurements right, forget about it.
OK, Some T parts history, the two on the left are PRE 1926, the one on the right is a seldom seen 26-27 commercial chassis firewall, different than the common 26-27 posted in another reply. These commercial firewalls are flatter and may give you more engine room if you need it. Bob
