Hey guys. does any of you know if it is possible to mount a conventional gearbox on a Ford T? Is there an adapter kit or something? Regards from Denmark
Saw a guy put a four speed behind the t trans, I think he gutted the trans and had a lot of machining done, but that was 10 years ago, and I haven't seen it since.
Interesting. The T 2-speed can become an underdrive first gear if the 4- or 5-speed behind it is a close-ratio box. Installation can be simplified if the second box is mounted "divorced", i.e. about halfway to the axle. I wonder how much torque a T gearbox can take.
I seen a T at the Turkey run that had a 4 wheel drive conversion when new and it also had a 3 speed trans adapted to the original T motor too,the owner was never around so I could not get any more info than what was there at the car.
There were several companys that built add on divorced gear boxes back in the 20s and 30s for Ts. I used to own a couple of them , just let the last one go with a 1917 t last year. Found the ones I had at swap meets
The first thing to go in a stock T trans is the cotton lining on the low gear band, if you run any hp through them its best to buy Kevlar material and attach it to the band with brake rivets. After this is done I have seen rear diff pinion gears broken off with no damage to the trans. But I did see a guy with a 300 hp Gemsa T destroy a T trans once.
Thanks for all your technical-know-how. Thank heaven for the HAMB Im not sure if im did my question right, cause i want to get rid of the T trans, if its possible. I have a couple of A trans lying around in my storrage, but i dont know if it is possible or should i just drive with the original???
As GrahamSC said, a common aftermarket upgrade was to put an auxiliary transmission behind the stock T planetary trans. There were straight/OD 2 speed models, and underdrive/straight/OD 3 speed models. Shorten the driveshaft, torque tube and radius rods, then the auxiliary trans bolted at front of that to the trans.
The problem with removing ( cutting off) the original trans and replacing it on a T engine is that the trans and engine share the same crank case and oil , and the fly wheel is your "oil pump " If you enginer another type oiling system for the engine and invent another oil pan that seals forward of the flywheel and design an adaptor to mount the new trans etc. , you probably could do it. Looks to me like more effort than its worth.
i dont want it to be such a big projekt, i go for a foot throttle, and thats it. I think the model t trans is fun, im just a little worried if i can learn to drive it securly, in the traffic. is floor throttle just a DIY conversion, or do someone make a kit?
If this is a stock T just practice driving the stock planetary trans, it isn't that hard to get used to. Bob
Is there a company that sells race-parts for T`s, or is it "just" MACS? I need both decklid and windshield, found it new/repro, but it will cost more than I paid the car, before it is in Denmark.
Okay. I've only tried my friend's father's 25 tudor, a little around a parking lot. It´s very funny. He love to drive T´s, he got three of them. And almost every year he drive from Denmark to Norway to a meet/hillclimb for pre-1930 cars. He says that it is a fantastic trip and by about 40-50mph. it drives awesome.
Try Langs - they list some speed stuff https://www.modeltford.com/ For body parts in Europe you could try Neil Tuckett http://www.modeltford.co.uk/ Cheers *****
there was a company called himco that made a kit to put a normal dry clutch and 3 speed box on a t motor very rare, very expensive, one for sale now at model t haven. my friend has a mustang ****** in his t speedster. he gutted every thing except the clutch pack, and welded up the back of the pan (shortened too i think), used aluminum hogs head and welded that up to match his new pan with a flat surface to mount the trans. the wet clutch with turbo 400 disks will take a lot of abuse. he has dynoed about 75 hp with a laurel head and smokes the tires off the line at the hill climbs
