I found these in a box the other day, I had forgotten all about them. I built most of them when I was in my young teens. They're looking a bit beat up but overall they've held up pretty good considering that they are over 20 years old. Looks like my son and I can have some fun this winter reserecting them.
That is cool rocket88! My son and I were digging around in the attic and found a bunch of models I did when I was a kid. We plan to freshen them up again too.
Don't have any pics but somewhere I still got a yellow ribbon I won in a model car contest in the old Austin, Tx Aquafest. Local hometown Winns store sold model kits, could enter your car there they would take to Austin for the contest. Customized a '56 Ford PU. Must of been around 1959 or 60. Damn, I'm getting old.
What am I doing wrong? There's no link to a site or pics on your post that I can see. Never mind. After posting this message, the image showed up.
I don't have any left....we blew em all up or strapped estes rocket engines to em. Country kids didn't have much for entertainment.....
when I was a kid you couldnt walk into my room because I had soo many car models. Hit my teens and threw them all away.... dumbass. Now I only build models that fly. Cermark Pitts with a Saito four stroke. My problem is that I have too many hobbies. My wife married a moron.
Hell Root, I did that to everything with wheels, it would piss my mom off bad when I would melt one down the same day I got it!! Now I`ve had to find them all back for 50 times the price my mom paid the first time!
low-n-loud, know what you mean. I've got about 6 radio controlled cars and all the crap that goes along with them. They are awfully fun though
Rocket88, Those survived well, you did a good job glueing those together. Lots disassemble themselves over the years. DrJ, Would that be a Matador I see in the lot? I didn't know they made a model of it. Here's one of my survivors. Too bad I don't have any of the real early ones. The ones just like the box art, with all the glued on louvers, triple lake pipes and flame decals.
Ok, you struck a nerve with this one. I've wanted to ask about this many times but it seemed...trivial. Back when I was a kid (dirt was still a pretty new concept), I built an early '60s (I'm thinking '63) Galaxie. It had a bar running down the middle of the roof with gull wing windows. I would love to have this model again. Has anyone ever seen it? I'm sure it's not available like some they've redone. I had a pickup truck with a trailer that I used to "haul" the Galaxie with. I did take a '40 2dr sedan and remove the roof. It looked pretty good as I remember. I painted it a metallic silver blue. I have no idea what ever happened to all my models but I had a huge box (that my "Big T" came in) full of spare parts that I used to modify my cars. Now those were the good ole days.
[ QUOTE ] ... DrJ, Would that be a Matador I see in the lot? I didn't know they made a model of it.... [/ QUOTE ] "They" didn't. I built it from a regular '40 ford kit by measuring the drawings in the November 61 R&C. I built it in 61 and still have it. Paints crazed but it's still there.
Interesting post! I built countless models as a kid and into my early 20s, but for some strange reason, I never got around to building a 57 Chevy for myself. Always kind of meant to, just never actually did it! I stumbled onto a mostly unbuilt 57 Chevy kit that I had forgotten all about in my closet the other day, and decided it was high time to build one! Here's a shot of the body ready for glass installation and final emblem painting. I wanted to do this car as a meld of the red 57 from the 80s teen movie "Catch Me If You Can" and the infamous yellow Project X car. It's getting a 6-71 huffed 454 with a Muncie four speed and some drag slicks out back. Wheels will either be American Racing polished (chrome) 5-spokes or chrome Cragar SST mags. Funny thing is...the 80s have come back to visit...I picked up a really cool Atari system yesterday that's pretty slick. It's a classic Atari 2600 style joystick that plugs directly into your TV with no game console required! It has 10 classic Atari games pre-programed into it, so you're ready to rock! Ha Ha...just had to stop by the little party store in Garden City for a 16.9 ounce glass bottle of cold Pepsi to round out the effect...and POOF...with a model on the bench, Atari between building tasks, and a glass bottle of Pepsi...it's 1983 all over again! Models I built when I was a kid???? I'm still there, Dude!!!
I've still got all of my models and about half of my Dad's, all stashed away in my house and my parent's house. This however was just this week! This was a pro street 1/24 diecast that I got in the early/mid 90s and it was purple and silver, with pink razor scallops and a huge blower out the hood, which I scrapped. After sitting in the closet for a couple years at the office, I decided it needed a makeover. The motor is out of one of my many diecast '67 chevelles.
How are you guys getting the wide whites to look so good? Mine always turned out like shit. Great pics, keep em coming!
"Yeah, Mom, Go ahead and throw that box of models away." Damn, I still kick myself for getting rid of all my old stuff in the mid '70s.. Heres what I'm building nowadays (you've probably seen it posted in the previous Friday Art Shows"). My signature has a link to the rest of my models...
Great thread, rocket88! You guys have some pretty cool stuff. I only have one old model that survived all my many moves around the country. I built this around 1980 with plans of making a bodyshop diorama to display it in. Never got that far. Maybe I should try now as a winter project. LOL I got tired of everyone asking when I was going to finish the car, so when George Barris was at our ISCA car show awhile back I got him to sign the roof. I rather like the look of it all ratty.
Hey there Boyd WHo, that better be real patina on that model or the Nazis on here will tear you a new one! You need to leave your model out in the weather for like 30 yrs, and drop little chains and stuff all over it, then just find a way to make plastic rust and it will be acceptable!
[ QUOTE ] How are you guys getting the wide whites to look so good? Mine always turned out like shit. Great pics, keep em coming! [/ QUOTE ] I just spin the axle slowly between my thumb and forefinger and hold the brush steady. They're not perfect, but they do the job. If I practiced, they would have turned out much better.
[ QUOTE ] How are you guys getting the wide whites to look so good? Mine always turned out like shit. Great pics, keep em coming! [/ QUOTE ] There's a model message board at www.modelcarkits.com, and recently someone posted a how-to on airbrushing whitewalls with a mixe of acryllic white and water. These things look PERFECT. Go there and search for white walls. I'm 19, so don't know which of my builds qualify as built when i was a kid, but here's a pic of the two I've had around the longest.
I still have to dig out my models, but I did have my first one I spray painted at the BP show. A gold lindberg drag A roadster. But I did dig this out of my boxes and started it the other night, I figure it's older than I am so it should live.
