perhaps raise your tank, than utilize the space below it so its not just empty space. You could put your tail lights under the tank, or possibly a small storage area? it really doesn't look all that bad from where I'm sitting
I like the look from the front. It's the back that has been the problem from the beginning. I wanted to do a turtle deck or modified coupe quarter panels. But that rear panel is just too damn high. If I would have used a Model A/T rear spring it wouldn't have been so bad. I really didn't want a huge kit up out back though. I'm going to go to the shop and stare at it for a while today. I do have a Model A running board tool box that could get strapped in back there. I gotta have some place to put tools.
Short of re-doing your rear end with a new crossmember & spring like you mentioned, I think the toolbox idea is the way to go. Use what you've got! Keep the build moving forward! I think finishing the build is more important than getting everything just right this time around. You can always go back and make changes once you've driven the car around for a while.
I don't want a high arch spring. I like the look of the '32 frames, and this was the first step. I'll do some more soon. The fix would be finding a 26/27 body! I pulled the body off and started working on the front shock mounts and steering stuff for now. Some of the club guys stopped by, and the body might end up getting hacked up a bunch! It's too tall and too wide.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v475/beau_layman/DSCI0007-1.jpg looking at this picture, and going from what you said about cuttin up the body...why not just "section" it by removing the lower couple inches? Sorta like channelling it, but you'd just lop the whole bottom off instead of just the floor.
There's some 27 sheetmetal pretty cheap in the parts section of the classifieds here. I was tempted but the freight would put it out of my reach right now so I'm just going to patch the 27 I've got up with some panels I just got and fabricate the rest. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=758605 That's short money for what's there if you can get to it cheap enough. Looks like it's about 400 miles from you. If you go this route, let me know if you've got spare metal left over, I need it Here's another cowl from my bookmarks: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=667353
You seem to be having the same problems I had, mine had about 4" of the door bottoms gone or mostly gone and I wanted to run the '36 drive shaft exhaust out of the side of the frame. So ('32 guys stop reading here) I trimmed 4" off the bottom of the cowl and installed patch panels and added '32 truck door patches to the doors so there was a bottom reveal. To me the body has a much slimmer look to it and with all the ads and pics. I've had posted only one guy has picked it out or at least only one guy has mentioned it. Mine has a mini channel plus -4" Just a thought.
You SOB! haha thats what I'm doing! Like you I've changed directions so many times, 3 times allready for me. I started out building a coupster, then realized my quarters are shit so I was gonna go modified because you inspired me to do that, then when I found a usable tub I finally decided on going tudor phaeton. Mine is a Buick tudor rear, I can't believe how similar that body line is.
Ha! I have never seen your project! I was just up late last night and it struck me, PHAETON! We'll see. I have access to a couple more door skins I could use.
I think one of the visual problems from the side view is that the back lip on the body is a bit high or is at too steep of an angle up from the door. Maybe it needs the beads from the door in it, I dunno. Ever think of putting an inch or so spacer un top of that rear spring to see how it would look more raked? The tub idea is pretty cool though!
I have to re arch a couple more springs for the rear end. It will be coming up a bit though. The rear panel still needs to be cut down a little bit. I figure level with the top of the doors. I had a buddy do another photoshop with the tank where I have it, and just the body dropped. I feel a little better about this now. The concern will now be how tall the radiator shell is!
I forgot to mention, Norton, that I have a spare door skin so I can blend the beltline from the door to the body. I agree, I think the channel and tank look better in these locations. Back to square one again! Thanks for the help/feedback!
that looks awesome.... if it were mine... and I wish it was ,... I would go this way.. longer and higher. Roy
really digging the tub, there aren't a whole lot of traditional tubs in MN. the channel really gives it a nice stance and lends itself to the short wheelbase. I'd work with what ya got and channel it. That rear panel is nice and tall so the door tops and and back wont be at your bellybutton when you're driving it like every other channeled open car. but hey like you said-its just tractor parts! whatever you decide, let me know when i can bring my grinder and a 6'er.
Heck yeah! The lady works all weekend so I will be in the shop all weekend. I picked up tubing for the windshield frame, and I'm going to extend and finish the front wishbone and mount. Hit me up.
Some things I have to leave to the experts. Monk, from The Flywheels Drag Racing Club did some more work for me. In or to adapt the V6 Camaro T5, I had to have the 215 flywheel re-drilled. I'm using a V6 S-10 pressure plate. This way, if I find a V8 T5 I only need to change out the clutch disk. He also put new reference dowels in. The pedals and clutch will be coming soon!
Nice looking clutch! I recall mods that myself and my bro in law did to get a T5 behind a 283. We drilled out the rivets, removed the entire central spring assembly contraption (on the disc) and then welded the main splined hub back onto the disc. We were then able to install the disc "flipped over" from it's normal orientation, getting the clearance we needed. Sounds screwed up, doesn't it? Well, it works great to this day. I told my bro in law, you don't need those springs in the disc - they are for grandmas......
I spent a lot of time in the shop this weekend. I made the front wishbone bone mount on the F1 cross member. Then I started to clean up a hacked set of 37-41 bones. They still need lots of work. Someone had fun with a cut off wheel. They are a bit more heavy duty than the Model A bones. I figure with the added length, a stronger set would be better. The beginning. I added almost 3/16" of material on the on in the back. Weld, grind smooth. I did some goofy stuff with the bones. I flipped them, then cut the nine times and arched them the other way. The need one more cut up front and they should be good. The photo is crap. I'll post better pics when I get it closer to done. You can see I need to drop the steering arms down a bit. I also dropped off some black pipe to be milled out for the start of my windshield frame. I'm using the Tech Archive to make it.
I will get more tonight. I didn't have a camera all weekend. Looks like the one star fairy stopped by. Thanks asshole.
