Guess when you really analyze it ... 'PRO Stocks' are really just 'Modified Production' cars! Da 'Sox' ... ... lookin a bit introspective (concerned?), perhaps because of that 'grumpy' fellow pitted next to him!
My old man ran modified production all through the 70's It's funny to see all the big names in racing on t.v. and have dad tell me stories of open trailers and alcohol fueled shenanigans!
55 today it's enclosed trailers, other than that not much has changed after racing is over for the day
Of course, I don't have any pics to add, but I hope someone does of the 30's and 40's bodied cars that ran in M/P. Always enjoyed watching the doorslammers.
M/P has to have been one of the greatest classes ever. A lot of the race cars looked like your regular hot rod that you'd cruise around in even if they were a world away from a stocker. To this day I'd rather watch doorslammers than anything the modern NHRA has to offer and that includes the look alike soulless funny cars. What ever happened to Modified Production? Did bracket racing kill it?
Joe Orem's early 50's Plymouth MP in action at Pocono Drag Lodge. I watched this car being built. 283 SBC, Duntov cam, 1 four barrell, 4 speed. red primer. Joe sold it and built an Anglia gasser. Rumor was some one chopped it and it was sitting in a gas station in the Wyoming Valley for years, probably another victim of Hurricane Agnes flood. . .
Around 1969-1970 my dad had a red '64 Tempest he ran in B/MP at Capitol Raceway here in Maryland. Car had a 396 out of a '69 Chevelle coupled to a close ratio Muncie and a 12-bolt loaded with 4.88 gears. Running a set of 9 inch wrinkle wall MH's he said it was good for mid 12's. Not bad considering it was his daily driver.
For the guys who didn't follow Modified Production go here and crank it up ! Man I miss M/P http://www.competitionplus.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9396&Itemid=51
Great picts of edegewater sports park.have any picts of the"granny goose"camaro or "purple haze"falcon.both ran d/mp.camaro was a record holder.
I ran a '67 Camaro w/396+.030 (402), Chrysler 4spd, 5.14 12 bolt in B/MP. It was knocking on the door of the record (10.90 at the time) when A couple of Dodge Darts that couldn't make it in Pro/Stock added 600 lbs and started running B/Modified. Within 3 wks the record dropped to the mid 10's and I hung it up. Nothing like butting heads with factory backed iron. Interesting is the fact I ran 10.80's shortly after the record went south. Oh well, shit happens. Frank
Yeah, what was crazy most guys pulled front bumper off their car and ran modified production with alower record for the tree but if they had left the bumper on thecould run different class withslower tree and probably be spotted by cars that usually didn't
If you didn't have a bumper, you were bumped up to Gas. From post 25 in this thread. "....Also from the 1964 NHRA rulebook in the Modified Production section: "BUMPERS: Stock front and rear bumpers are required." Larry T
