Looks like this was shot at a shopping center promo, maybe for the Spring Nationals at Columbus. Another 6 cyl. modified. Strickler's dodge in the background.
It looks to be the 500 Shopping Center parking lot in Indy where everyone went to get teched for the U.S Nationals.Great photo! First time I've seen this car. Can anyone ID it?
I bet that Penneys Store manager was happy the event was in their parking lot. I wonder if they stocked up on speed parts for the event?
Anyone have any more photos of Bill Jenkins in Doc's Plymouth at the Indy US National 1965? First is from the Dec. 65 issue of SS&DI.
Hello, No that is the Speedway shopping center in Speedway Indiana . That is where they used to do the tech inspection before the National drags. For a young "gearhead" or any "gearhead" that parking lot was heaven! You got to see "up close and personal" all the cars and drivers you read about in the magazines!
Colesy - I just realized that my friend "terrible"Tommy Steiner's 61 C/S vette from Canton, OH is in immediate background in this pic. Tommy won C/S at Indy one of those years. His car was 270/283 just like Larry Lombardo's "Buckshot" - but Tommy had quit racing that combo by 1966. Thanks for the Pick Islandman!!
Not 100% positive but I think this car was later painted in the red, white and blue scheme and ran out of the Rod Shop.
Well, now that last picture of the Black Arrow DOES have Grumpy on the door;usually he took all of Doc's name off the car when he ran it...he must not have had time for this event. The rear wheels have already been moved forward a bit, but still no moon tank in the grill, this pic is very early in 1965, because the car didn't survive stock very long at all. Also already has a fiberglass front bumper on it, and plexiglass side windows as there are no vent windows.
Yup - yur right-on! Lonnie Stickle/Bob Riffle. Bob worked at Rod Shop and campaigned several more cars out of the Rod Shop!!
Here's one of Riffles earlier Gassers - a 40 Willys 4 dr. He also had a 55 Chev gasser prior to this - I thought I had a pic of it but cant seem to find it? Mayb e someone else out there has a shot of his 55 Gasser? Here he is racing the Jay Rambo "ANXIOUS" 6 - banger Gasser that was posted in boards 702-706 yesterday in the other lane?
Wagons, El Caminos, Rancheros, and pick-ups all ran with tailgates down back then. Dont know when NHRA rules banned the practice?
Another shot of the Black Arrow. This was at Cecil County circa 1965. Not sure if the Grump was driving. Notice the front fenders were from the Jack Werst "Mr 5 & 50" Plymouth.
Yep, Mike Papp owns Tony's old Corvette pictured here that he purchased from David Hughes about 20 or so years ago. Oh, btw Rocky, I know you. At least I talked to you a few times back when I used to work for Randy Ditzel and Half/Scale Dragsters, Inc. back in the early-mid-1990s. Pete
Yeah, it says, "Stormin' DVM" (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)on the door there, something Doc did for a short time. When we bought the car, the front fenders were original "lead white" paint from the factory, not Jack Werst's fenders.
Colesy, you posted this picture awhile back and it's taken me forever to figure out who it MIGHT be. I think it's Paul Sable from the Bangor/ Easton/ Stroudsburg area of Pennsylvania. He later ran an Opel GT and a 69 Camaro called Brass Tacks which I think was the name of a restaurant he owned. This picture has a Tony Feil decal in the window and I think he was still a customer with the 69. Maybe Rich Beibel remembers.
