Alfster, I spent a good time at the Nats North riding around in the green modified with the NO.27 on the side. I talked to the owner for better than an hour. He is a machinist and built several unique parts on the car. You are correct about the steering arm being bent to clear the headlight through the full turning range. I'll tell you one thing the last component of that car that will bend is the steering rod. It's heavier than a tie rod on a 2 ton truck and it's made out of 4130 VERY heavy wall. The total car would collapse before the rod would bend.
If you ever see the car in person go talk to the owner and let him explain how he did everything, you'll walk away impressed. The car is/was for sale so he may not own it now.

willowbilly3-Why is a dogleg in the draglink a "no no"??

Well I had a T-bucket with a dogleg and it was a deathtrap. When you think of the forces at play on the two 90 degree angles being bent sideways instead of a straight on compression or extension force of the same sized drag link. The one I had was a little fatter than the one in the picture and it would flex and twist over a half turn in the steering wheel. I imagine that one does it too. I think after a certain amount of flexing the metal will fatigue and break.

Willoby3, You would be incorrect in all of your observations concerning the steering arm on the modified. After riding in it and observing how EVERYTHING on this car operates I'll just reconfirm my previous post.
First this car was never built to get out on the highway for "mile after mile" travel, it's not that kind of car. I'm sure it is capable of this kind of driving but the guy that owns it trailers it long distances.
If you've ever ridden in a car like this with small cushions for seating and somewhat cramped quarters you would realize the effect if would have on your back, arms and legs during an extended trip. It's powered by a 60 hp flathead V8 so I doubt you would subject it to this kind of driving.

  6. We took a couple leaves out of the Model A rear spring in the 999 car. We put them back in after we drove it and it was too weak.

Ok you guys did it to me. Im collecting parts now. so what front spring are you running on a suicide front end? Ive been collecting parts this week to build one and I think I pretty much have it wrapped up. this is what I have so far. stock model A frame with running engine and axles, a set of 40 ford front and rear axles, 40 ford brakes and master cyl, A model a cowl doors and cab back, model A radiator and grille shell, 16 inch wire wheels. I stll need a gas tank. what front and rear end should I use and what springs? Im mounting the front suicide and steping the frame in the rear and Im going to lengthen the cab a few inches. thanks, Mel

I'm glad you resurrected this site from the depths. It reminds me that I've still got to pick through it for more information for my site.

My modifieds site, btw, has been going through some major changes recently. New content should start showing up in the near future.

All you modified lovers should get a copy of the book "Flat out" by Albert Drake, if you haven't already. It has a lot of info and pics of old modifieds. Awsome reading

I bougt my copy from the Hot Rod company, a HAMBER.

    Go get it. [IMG]

How about speedsters? I have a good friend who is a Model A restorer and we are both thinking about building A speedsters. His will no doubt be banger powered but I think mine would be a little more exotic/modern more along the lines of a 20s two place Indy car with A six or straight 8.

what gas tank is this? i've seen similar before and assume it's a stock tank from some production car, but have never asked what from.

    very cool car, b-t-w.

  27. Wow - thread back from the dim n' distant past.
If you have any pics of the rear of your speedster, I'm planning one using the spare T engine I have. Is the rear Z'ed at all?
