Have any of you guys tried to modify a stock '40 Ford (coupe) front seat to remove the coil springs with modern springs/foam? I would appreciate any pictures and/or hints (if it is possible). Thanks:)

Funny you guys bring this up! I was at my buddy's house last Saturday and I asked him how come he switched out the stock bench in his 40 coupe. He put in buckets. He said it was too uncomfortable, that it was too soggy. I told him I know some upholstery guys and I would ask them if they can be updated with the new webbing like they do the house sofas.I'll keep you guys posted!

You can still order the older coil seat springs, not cheap though. I think Mac's and others have them. I ordered mine through all ford parts campbell ca

You wouldn't use webbing, like in house furniture, I wouldn't think. The thing to use would be a grid and spring arrangement like used in later model Ford and Chevrolet pickups. the wire "grid" comes in several widths and lengths, and can be cut, lengthwise, to work in any application. The springs and grid are sold by most any upholstery supply co., and are also good Junkyard items.
Foam cushions can be fashioned in about any density, or combination thereof, by gluing layers of foam together and cutting the finished product to desired size an shape.

I agree with vertible59 as to the '40 Ford seat overhaul approach. I was hoping to find someone that sucessfully did the modification. As you guys know, there is a bunch of oak wood in the seat frame. The forward part of the seat has wood structure that will hit the back of your knees. I hope to find someone that has modified this oak to attach the spring wire grids and made it comfortable to sit in. It's the seat "bounce" from the stock coils that I don't like.

I'm an upholsterer and rebuilding a 40 Ford Front seat is difficult and expensive. If you want to change the overall shape of the seat from the "overstuffed" look to a modern look. the only thing that you end up saving is the bottom part of the frame. Generally, the seat is out of shape with a few weak springs. The spring are available but the replacement is labor intensive. The cotton padding needs to be replaced. It is almost to modify the seats to get away from the "overstuffed" look. The front seats do not lend themselves to many design options for recovering. the "classic" look is all that looks correct with these seats. I need any suggestion that people have modified and post pictures please 36fordguy
