  4. Okay, here's my dilema, I have 2 Borg Warner T-10s, one is a cast iron case and the other is an aluminum, both early '63 and '62 I belive, regardless, my question is will this work as both were stored in a damp enviroment and are seized up tight! Thoughts on this??

You could spray paint the surfaces you don't want to pit, then after the soak remove the paint with stripper. I don't see why that wouldn't work. The molasses is real cheap out in the small country town grain stores, less than $2 per gallon, I took 5 gallon bucket and they fill it for less than $10.. What a deal and it's green.

  8. One of the previous posts stated that it will eat aluminum and zinc. So don't put your tranny in there if it's go any aluminum.

  9. Got this tip from 97 on the Feb Banger thread:

"You can mask the bearings with wax or other electroplating methods... the latest method is to
    Use Dymac Speedmask....
    http://www.dymax.com/products/masking/index.php
it is a resin for protecting machined surfaces temporarily during electroplating and acid cleaning processes, remember to plug any oil feed holes from the other side too.... "

Does everything come off with a rinse is do you need to scrape and brush off the "slag". I brush on a product (I think its called Rust-Mort) that I got at an auto paint store. The next day the rust is turned into a black sludge that I need to wire brush off. That's ok for the outside of the part, but wouldn't work for oil galleys etc.

  11. Yeah I saw that one, dump it on the lawn/garden. But that does not necessarily mean it's right, kind of like dumping anti-freeze into a storm drain?

I'm no scientist, but there is obviously some chemical conversion/reaction going on there. It would be nice to know [for certain] there is no harm done putting on the lawn, especially where animals are present.

Whatever you do, DON'T seal it! The drum NEEDS to be vented to the atmosphere! Fermentation produces carbon dioxide gas - lots of it - and if it's not able to vent , you could possibly build up enough pressure to cause the drum to burst , or at the very least, severely injure you by blowing the lid into you're face when you go to remove it!

  13. If you have a lid on a drum of this stuff wouldn't it cause the drum to expand if sealed?Could you vent it through a water filled vent like they use in wine making?
Nothing like creating a time bomb!! Any info? Rob.

No, all that would be needed is to vent
the drum to the atmosphere, via a hole
in the the lid. The purpose of the
water-filled vent used when making wine
or beer is to allow the CO2 created by
the fermentation to safely vent, while
    preventing airborne bacteria that could
    contaminate the fermentate from entering.
You'd only need the water-filled vent thingy
if you planned to drink the resulting goop left
over after you finished de-rusting your
    block....and I woudn't recommend anyone
    try that!!! :eek::eek::eek:

In 1919 a 2,300,000 tank of molasses ruptured in Boston, killing 21. It was a wooden tank with steel bands.

They must have been de-rusting some BIG parts...

  19. note of caution don't dump the old molasses into the storm drain all at one time! the drain nazi's will find you because even though its biodegradable large amounts of anything will throw off the ph in the treatment plant and pisses them off! my brother in law works at a local grocery store and the freezer took a shit one day and all of their ice cream was quickly melting so his boss tells him to just start opening up the packages and wash them down the drain in the back of the store. all of the sudden the drain nazi's showed up and fined the hell out of them. they were going to fight it in court.

  21. Well I have my first results from my molasses bath. I got soem differential parts that were a bit crusty from years of sitting so I bought some molasses and made up a pail of 5:1 mix and dumped the parts in.

    Before...

    And after...

The side bearings were seized solid and after a month of sitting I can turn them freely!! This has made a believer out of me!!

  22. It was the raw material for explosives. After hostilities ceased it was left full, a level it had never been before during production.

I just finished some parts and they turned out good. My question is can I reuse the molassis? I mean can i put another part or parts in the tank and leave it 4 weeks and it clean them also?

Well, I for one am glad he posted this. Thanks Drfreez for posting. And, I'll tell you why, Tman. How is one to search for something that is not known or not common knowledge. What key words would one use to produce an effective search, when this is the first time, a novice like me, has ever heard of such a process.

This is great tech info for those of us whom are not in the know.

Its funny, how old this thread is, and yet its the first time I'm seeing it.

  26. I reused the molasses for a couple months, and a bunch of different parts. After a while though I started getting these little nodules on the clean metal surface, almost looked like salamander eggs. Kind of gross, and I had to take a screw driver and flat scrapper to get them off.

So I would recommend cycling it out every couple months or so.
