I just acquired a 51 ford custom that I understand to have a newly rebuilt flathead motor, transmission, clutch, pressure plate and rear end. The car nearly shakes itself apart in first gear and reverse. Before I remove the transmission to get at the clutch. I am wondering if it could be rear end wind-up? The rear end is mounted on 6" lowering blocks which sit on mono leaf springs. Any ideas? Thank you for your time........Dave in SLC
SIX inch blocks?? That might not cause the problem, but would certainly magnify the heck out of it. Ditto with the springs, especially if they are not true monoleafs but just regular leaf springs with all the other leaves removed. 6 inch blocks are dangerous anyway - your scrub line has to be nill. Start by taking out the blocks and putting in different leaf springs, then see what you get. A little clutch chatter shouldn't be that intense.
6" blocks scare me. A ton of axle wrap i bet. And a mono leaf? Not much to safegaurd if that goes bad.
WOW, 6in blocks is alot try 4 inch blocks and shorten the shackle ( redrill the hole higher maybe ) and relocate the front hanger. As for mono leafs, be sure you have the helper ( overload or the really thick short bottem spring ) in place along with the main leaf, this will keep the main from D-arching and also trying to turn itself into a S shape, you can add wrap around clamps around the helper spring and the main for some added insurance and firm up the ride. Godspeed MrC.
