The snap on ones look cheap. But to the non-car guy, they look fine to them if you they like the moon look.

  3. I prefer the original screw on MOON disc. HRP

I run the snap-on Moon disks, unapologetically, on my avatar. They look great to me, and that's all that matters.

When I bought them, I knew little of the "traditionalness" of dzus or button-head fasteners. For me, fitting the fasteners is a lot of grief for the sake of a few visible fasteners.

    Each to their own though.

    Cheers,

I put them on my son's OT high school car. He thought they were cool as hell, and so did all his buddies. Wheel flex meant that sometimes I had to push them back on a little with the palm of my hand. These were real Moons, too, bought directly from Moon.

  7. Agree, snap ons look cheap and somebody that does not know that will jack em anyway. Take the time to mount the proper screw on OR Dzus mount style

  8. I had a set on my daily pickup for a while and got tired of them pretty quick. I think it’s because they have that ridge around the outside and kinda stick out from the wheel, real moons are more flush. Seems like a small detail but it makes a big difference.

So I took them off and had them lettered as trophies for the Hot Rod Hundred Reliability Run I used to put on. I forgot to rinse the brake dust off the backs so the winners got dirty hands when they got them.. hahaha oops.

  9. One more thing, if I was going with moons I’d go all in and weld the dzus tabs to the wheels. That’s some racecar stuff right there, will add 10hp per wheel.

Real old school and “traditional”. Pep Boys snap on and porta-walls circa 1958

  11. Kinda far away pic but those do look better than what you can get for a snap on these days. I think the new ones don’t look that good anymore.

A genuine PIA! Ended up with severe wheel balance issues and had to buy a second template from Moon. And actually lost 6HP per wheel.

  13. Never thought about possible balance issues. Yeah that would suck.

I tried them and lost some on the interstate. Better use screws

The screws will eventually work thru on most steel wheel (as I learned on my new '62 Camaro).

Even then, it's a pain to check tire inflation. If you screw them on, weld up the valve stem hole on the outside of the wheel and put it in the inside, 'cause screwing all the time (no, you know what I mean) will lead to desertion.

I bought a 66 C10 that the previous owner had put the snap on ones on. I didn’t like the look on that pickup so took them off and ran original style dog dish caps. But, a couple years later my son snapped them on his little lowered O/T pickup and everyone thinks it is the coolest. They stay on good and he probably drives that thing as hard as anyone.

Would not say they were ugly, nope.
    They were, however, cheap.
That's why us kids ran them:p

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

If it works for you thats all that matters.

  22. When I was a younger guy (22 maybe 23 years ago around 22 or 23 years old) I was driving my 1973 Lincoln Continental, I had someone snag my stock caps so I went to a VW place that used to be in Riverside and bought some cheap Taiwanese clip-on "moon discs".
They didn't look too bad although they definitely did not fit the look of the car but my bad tastes aside they were installed on the car anyways. That being said they lasted about a week, I was on interstate 10 around 2 AM trying to beat the heat (because the Lincoln runs warm when it's 110 out) I was just east of Cabazon (this is in California's low desert about 100 miles east of LA) and I hit a section of freeway that the expansion joints were 1 inch tall bumps probably 10 feet apart and at 70-80 miles an hour I would imagine the wheels were bouncing pretty good. I heard the generic moon cap come off the car and probably 3 seconds later another one came off the car I didn't bother to turn around to try to find them back then that area of the desert was pitch black I figured those hubcaps were long gone.
My point is I did not feel they clipped on the wheel real well at least compared to the stock hub cap. That being said my Lincoln probably weighs 54 maybe 5,500 lbs and back then I drove my cars aggressively those hubcaps were doomed from the second I bought them. Maybe they clip on a little better now but I doubt it.
That being said I still like moon disc on certain cars even the clip-on disc look pretty good at a quick glance.

Bought some at a swap meet a long time ago........Real cheap. Got them home to find that they were 16" ers. Had no stamped logo (MOON) so they were crafted locally. Cut them down to 15" with my jig saw and mounted them on my old Dodge Dakota, sure Looked faster!! Still have them in my stash.

There are two fastening types for the genuine snap-on Moon discs.

The first set I bought is all aluminium. They have serrated "teeth" on the back of them that grab the steel wheel rim. Those things are tight, and immediately take the paint off the steel rim. If you forget to take them off before going to the track they are nasty to remove. You can do it with a standard car tool kit screwdriver in the scrutineering lanes, but it takes a lot of cussing. Don't ask me how I know .

With the new Moons in place I asked Number 1 Son to turn the car around in the road. There was a terrible crunching noise that could be heard from inside the shop... yep, severe gutter rash and one destroyed Moon disc :(. The replacement disc I bought (after selling a kidney to afford it) is also genuine Moon, but has a wire retainer at the back (like modern hub caps) instead of the teeth. This one does not fit as tightly.

    Cheers,
    Harv

@Tman lol I think 90% of the type of person who would steal a hubcap these days don’t even know what a hub cap is

Maybe his Camaro identifies as a '62 so it can hang out on the HAMB.
