My buddy had cheapos on his 78 Bonneville (green w/louvers in the hood) and they would take off like frisbees sometimes.

I have 4 or 5 sets of the screw on ones. If you are interested, I could let a set go, but only for you. I plan on running them on a T also. For a future project.

    Hello,

One of the reasons my brother was one of the first guys to have a set of Moon Discs was so the covers would not come flying off around corners or road bumps. Being on a lowered rake also looked cool, but with Moon Discs and not other hubcaps, three prong Oldsmobile flippers, 4 prong Dodge Lancers, etc.

My brother’s group of friends always came over for a Saturday teen gab session and to do some mechanical work, while eating my mom’s great snacks and lunches for everyone. (That worked into a later dragstrip movie session when we started drag racing and filming at Lion’s Dragstrip.)

One of the early non driving jobs I had was to be the “go to kid” for those older teens. I did a lot of maintenance and replacing items on my brother’s original yellow paint 51 Oldsmobile sedan. We went through plenty of hubcap exchanges with the others that ran similar size wheels. I was the hubcap exchange person, while those teens sat back and enjoyed someone else doing the work.

When someone got a set of Oldsmobile 3 prong flipper hubcaps, everyone wanted to see what their car would look like, so I had a built in job. “Easy on, easy off…” Then it was a set of Dodge 4 prong Lancers.

But, the biggest complaint was the hubcaps rolling off of the wheels at the most awful of times. Late at night, sharp corners, small/large road bumps, and intersections with a two dip drainage dips/bumps.

Our local auto parts store just had the answer for those rolling away hubcaps. It was a wire bolted to a wheel/axle nut and a small ring was on the outside of the air pressure hole. So, if the hubcap rolled away, it would not go across the lanes and into a ditch or open drainage hole. The good thing is that no one lost a valuable custom hubcap. The bad thing was, if you did not pull over fast, the hubcap still had the safety wire on and rolled/banged around until stopped at the curb.

That led to my brother liking those flipper hubcaps, but was not enthralled with losing any of the hubcaps. He did not like the safety wire set up, either. So, he bought a set of screw in Moon Discs.

It was my job to get the rim prepared and to use the right drill in the pattern provided. The depth was always the thickness of the steel rim. If one goes too far, then trouble with the holding power and leaks start. Yes, some racers drill right into the rubber rim of the tire to add to the holding power of the wheel on acceleration. But on the streets, no one had 600 hp drag motors spinning the slicks at stop lights.

But the flat end screws hold the Moon Disc, but does not penetrate the rubber tire. The other method of Bill Dzus' marvelous fastener, "Dzus fasterners" were an option. It is one versus the other as far as easy air pressure tire checking. YRMV

Note: The snap on version allowed whole on/off of the disc making it easier to pop off/on. If the rim is painted silver, the disc disappears. If the rim is any other color, then everyone can see a nice smooth surface, but will say, they are hubcaps… So, one has to get used to it or don’t care about what others say… YRMV part 2

The snap=on ones from Moon would be much better than the other brands. No comparison between the two.
