    Hello,

In the early days of drag racing on the West Coast, if you had a fast car, it had to have Moon Equipment Company Aluminum Discs. If anything, it made the finishing touch to any car, let alone a drag race vehicle. But, in the same light, just about any size of Moon Equipment Company Aluminum Gas Tanks were also part of the drag racing scene. This was long before they were add-ons to the street/drag look of post 1960 hot rods and street cruisers.

After several explosions of those gas tanks that were inside of coupes and sedans, the major drag racing tech committee made a ruling to have everyone move the Moon Tanks out of the cab and in front of the motor. Some placed them in the trunk areas, too. So, the variations of types and sizes started a crazy movement that is shown in today’s hot rods and drag racing vehicles. Some neatly tucked in the Moon Tanks behind the grille, some behind the radiator, but definitely away from the driver. It wasn’t until at least into the late 60s-early 70s to see the Moon Style Tanks on the outside of any car, front or rear.

Tommy Ivo had plenty of firsts in hot rodding and drag racing. His custom made, small, Moon Tank fit nicely between the rails of his early dragster frame, in front of the motor. His early Buick powered single dragsters had the Moon Tank exposed. (above) Then the first fuel injected version had a streamlined body to cover the Moon Tank. But, between the streamlined body and the twin Buick FED, the 671 supercharged single Buick version had the tank exposed.

All different variations on the quest for the records and the need for speed.

I almost thought Loudbang's pic was the same as mine from Springfield MO. Different car though.

  19. Here’s the one in my 37/38 Chevy Coupe, can anybody ID it or is it just a cheap sand buggy tank?

I helped a friend building this 55. We first mounted a 3-1/2 gallon tank, but found running alcohol, he could barely make it back to the pits. So we ordered a new tank, so I could modify it for more capacity. The new tank was 1/2" wider and wouldn't fit in the grille opening, so I slit it down the middle, narrowed it, and added a sump. Vintage T/bullet tank - note Moon breather and one-piece brackets. This one's going on the block soon...
