Anyone know how many outlets are standard for the moon tanks that they produce thesedays? I figure they are geared at the "street rod" crowd more than the drag racers.
The 40 year old family Moon tank had one outlet on the bottom in stock form and one on the upper side. 3/8 NPT on the bottom and 1/4 NPT upper. Don't quote me on the sizes though. It was set up to be a pressure tank. Little brother added a fitting to the cap for a vent utilizing twisted copper line open to the atmosphere. That worked ok for gasoline and down to the low 10's. When he went to alcohol he put a 1/2" NPT bung in the bottom for the main outlet, added a couple of 3/8 NPT for a return line and it still had the cap vent fitting. At 2.5 gallons, it carried just enough alcohol to fire up at the ready line, move to the burnout area, do a reasonable burnout and make the run - in the nine's. Driving back was a maybe cuz it was quite low on fuel then. The HJ got towed to and through the staging lanes. He built a stainless tank that held a touch over five gallons and could then drive to and through the staging lanes, do the burnout, make the run and drive back to the pits. All without overheating the engine and in fact I don't think it ever went over 200 degrees due to the cooling effects of the alcohol. With gasoline, it got towed back from the timing shack due to it would be pretty hot by then. All of which is the long way round to tell you that aluminum weld-in bungs in various sizes are available from Earls and making your own ain't too hard.
