I'm creating this thread to post live updates from our Moonshine Run.
Starting out in Waynesboro, I will meet up with a bunch of other die hard Virginia Rodders in New London just outside of Lynchburg VA.
Then the tour will take us through the country side, the Blue Ridge Parkway, historic towns,...

    Stops will include:
Bedford, Floyd, Tuggles Gap, Stuart, Elamsville, Woolwine, Ferrum, Rocky Mount.

We'll be traveling from Friday through Sunday, and I want to share mostly pictures on here, since I'm not the greatest story teller.

Big thanks goes to Pete (phartman) for all his efforts to putting this together.

    Stay tuned!

My favorite rod run is the Moonshine Run in Dawsonville, GA. I think that a Moonshine run in Virginia ought to bring out the same type of car and it's a great theme for a show.
    Good Luck.

  4. Cool man! I'll expect some IG updates as well!

A number of us have discussed a rod run like this for several years. Good to see it is finally coming together. If we have a good time and there is the interest, we'll do it again next year.

Here is the schedule. We'll all meet at New London, VA, just down the road from the historic dragstrip. Then go over to Bedford, VA and have lunch here at the historic downtown train station:

    http://www.oldelibertystation.com/

We get on the Blue Ridge Parkway just west of Bedford, where it crosses VA Route 460. Then down to Floyd, VA. We'll stay here at Pine Lodge:

    http://www.thepinetavern.com

Friday night is bluegr*** music night in downtown Floyd. We'll take in the festivities at Floyd Country Store:

    http://www.floydcountrystore.com/

Saturday morning we'll drive down the Parkway to Meadows-of-Dan and see Mabry's Mill, and then down Route 58 to Stuart, VA. Stuart is the home of the Woods Brothers NASCAR team.

Then through Elamsville, VA and visit Clyde Turner, car and parts deal and town mayor:

Then to the heart of moonshine country to Ferrum, VA via the legendary VA Route 40. We'll travel down these roads:

Roddy Moore has graciously opened his garage to us on Saturday afternoon:

    http://www.vtmagazine.vt.edu/winter98/profile.html

We'll spend Saturday night in Rocky Mount, VA. The town was the setting for this book (and movie):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wettest_County_in_the_World

Then everybody heads back home on Sunday. Stay posted, more to come.

Don't believe it? Moonshining is dead? Moonshining is all made up, just something staged for TV? Uhh, this just happened. It's where we're going on this run. Big business, serious stuff. Still lots being made. You'll have to trust me on this. ;)

  7. Sounds like a great run. I can attest to the good food at the Old Train Station in Bedford. We have dined there several times. We have a house at Smith Mt Lake and travel the roads and towns you will be going thru often. Rocky Mt is a good town to check out some antique shops. A couple months ago I found parts of an old moonshine still and a good shine jug, both were dirt cheap. Post photos later :D

Wow, sounds like a great event. Too bad I've already made plans for the Jalopy Showdown. Maybe next year. I am looking forward to seeing the photos. :D

That looks like fun, maybe i'll have something worthy of cruising in by next year and i'll join up. Gotta swing thru the The Plains, that was where all the hooch was made. A dealer installed option was hooch tanks installed behing the upholstery of your Tudor Model A Sedan. I have seen one of those cars and heard lots of semiauthentic stories.

This looks like great fun in one of my favorite parts of the country......I really like the fact that reliability runs are comming back into popularity.

These static car shows get so boring!!

that's a helluva drive. sounds like fine. give us some head's up next time and maybe some of us in the neighborhood can tag along.

  29. Lots of fun. We heard some fine bluegr*** and old time music last night at Floyd General Store. This morning took a very foggy ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Stuart, VA for the Strawberry Festival. Then rode the legendary moonshine highway- the narrow winding VA Route 40- from Woolwine to Rocky Mount, VA with one extended stop in Ferrum at Roddy Moore's garage and car collection.

Tomorrow morning, we'll continue the trail of the moonshiners. The route for white lightning to the major markets flowed on east on Route 40; then to routes 360 to Richmond; and 460 to Norfolk. Remote and isolated (but beautiful) areas of Virginia, out of sight from curious eyes and the law.

There is already talk of another trip. Stay tuned. More pics to follow.

    We've had a blast.
