I want an overdrive for my 56 Dodge Pickup. Someone on another board suggested an A833 overdrive would be an easy swap. So, where does one look for these? What cars/trucks had them originally? How can I ID one of them as an O/D unit instead of a regular 4 spd?
Look for the 5.125" input bearing retainer. http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm
If I remember correctly Mopar overdrive ******s had aluminium casing. Check this page http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm
I got the A833 NPG 3+1 I'm going to use on my project, out of an '84 Chevy pick-up. Mine has the Mopar bolt pattern, but I understand that some years had Chevy bolt patterns, too. Here's a pic I took when I first got it, if that'll help......
Not all A833 O/D's are aluminum. I'm running one with a cast case and have a couple more as spare's. The ones Chevy ran were called NP440's and do indeed have the chevy bell pattern. I've got a couple of these as well for a future project. All of these were aluminum.
