Back in the day (late 50's) several of my friends with 40's era mopar cars ran the original flathead 6's with split manifolds and dual or triple carb set ups. Recently acquired an early dodge coupe and have a rebuilt 318 /904 combination in the back of the shop I was going to use, but got to thinking about those flathead 6's. Looked on HAMB but didn't find much. Anybody running them today and is speed equipment available. thanks
and take a look here: http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/ Lots of mild hop ups on these older flatheads there.
I don't know what you searched, but there's a TON of info here on the board. Try Plymouth six, or some variants. www.50plymouth.com is a great place to start too
As said, lots-o-stuff and info available...here is another forum: http://www.powerwagonadvertiser.com/ .
FAT47...forget about the old 6 cyl. flatheads. the had soft crank's and didn't produce much H.P. even with mods. but if your hell bent on a mopar 6 cyl. well you best bet is the SLANT 6. now brother that's a different ballgame...POP.
Thanks guys. I will check out the sites you all offered. Mostly just curious as to what is out there and if people are still running them.
I am running a 0.060 over 218 with Offenhauser intake, Carter Webbers, cast iron headers and HEI from an S-10. Also have an OD Trans. Sound good and will cruise at 70-75 all day long. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxfKQ4KMM9s There are guys out there regrinding cams and Earl Edgerton is producing new finned aluminum heads. You will not win many drag races with the flathead but it does gather attention parked amid the sea of V8's. There are several guys running hopped up flatheads on the P15-D24 site http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/index.php?referrerid=1152 and putting lots of miles on them. Blueskies drove his from Idaho to Oklahoma then back and James Curl drove his from Austin to Reno to Bonneville then back to Austin.
Heres some more flathead porn. Hope fully my engine will be assembled soon...Machine work close, lots of new and nos parts going in.... This is a tattersfield intake purchased from a former hamber that hopefully will be adorning my engine. The wagon in my avatar just got sold sunday and those funds will be put in my 50 plymouth.
hkestes, where are the headers from on that engine? I've watched that you tube video a dozen times previously, it looks great, nice job.
As someone said, there are only about a zillion threads about these motors here on the HAMB. Everything from rebuilding to modifying to overhead camshafts on Slant 6 heads with super turbo-encabulator drives. Search 'done up', '218', '230' in addition to 'MoPar flathead 6' and similar variations. The one modification I would strongly recommend is the addition of a PCV system. The stock road-draft systems suck in dirty air; combined with the bypass oil filtration systems you get excessive wear of the lower end.
There are a ton of people still running these "low" HP engines. These engines were produced through '72 and were also used for industrial applications because of their reliability. I have over 30,000 miles of my own on this engine since I have owned it. It had just over 70,000 on it when I bought it. It has not been rebuilt. I am the second owner. Long distance hauls are what I do alot (3500-5000 mile trips at times). Keep the six. You'll blow peoples minds. BloodyKnuckles
One of the finest engines ever built which had a considerably longer life than the Ford flattie was the Mopar flatheads and especially the 265 Chrysler. In the mid 50's to early 60's those engines were prevalent in "Non-Ford" oval track racing and were awesome. Before you think I am a Mopar only guy, we raced 308 Hudson's and had them out cubed by 40+ cubes and about a mile of stroke more right off the bat...and the 265's were tough to beat. They could turn 5,800- 6,000 RPM without spitting the flywheel off and that was with the ancient crank balancers...if they were balanced. The cranks & rods are very good quality forgings and they have plenty of head bolts to retain the head gaskets. Try to get a 265 and you will be amazed at how great they are. In fact Chrysler offered the 265 as an option in the Power wagons up to 1967!!! If you use a 218 or 230 you still have a great bulletproof package, they are basically a 100% copy just physically shrunk down in overall size. Do the Mopar flattie!!!
Are those throttle tube brackets part of the manifold? Does that one have two patterns for the carbs? You can kinda see in this picture. My carbs are turned 90 degrees, and my throttle pulls to the rear. I wonder if yours is earlier or later than mine...
Here's Normspeed's 218 flatty ready to go back in his '53 Momad after a complete rebuild and hop up. Lee
That's what's in my 52 Dodge Truck right now. It's a 217 that was rated at under 90 horse fresh from the factory. I can't tell if it was ever opened up, but it still starts up every time and chugs along. When I finish my hemi swap, I'll clean it up and prep it for proper storage (in case I ever sell the truck, the new owner will have the option to go back to stock).
i wouldnt waste your time or money on em. I saw an Edmunds head last year at a show, looked perfect. Do a search, you should be able to locate one.
I have a 1959 Dodge Truck (Built in South Australia) Has a long flathead apparently from an army amphibious vehicle in it. I can't locate any type of oil filter at all! Help, where can I find it? Or could it just not have one?
not a mopar man 6 or 8 but afew of my buddy,s are one dave (p-38 0n hamb )has 2 souped up flathead 6,s one in a 46 plym.coupe and the other in a 38 plym coupe both have a lot of the cool factor when he opens the hood on ether one they draw alot of looker,s he drives both all over without problems so my 2 cents would be go with the flathead and have fun
