I just got the flatty rebuilt on the 53 and I'm tring to get it runing. When I took it apart for the rebuild I just took the dizzy, wires and loom off as one piece and didn't take anything apart. Well when I put the dizzy back in I took the cap off (with the wires still atatched) put the dizzy in and put the cap back on. THe cap can only go on one way cause there is a notch in it and the dizzy can only go in one way cause of the hold down and vac*** advance ect. But when I try to start it it backfires like mad and thats it. So I flipped the cap around and just clipped it on there with the notch on the wrong side and it runs like a ****ing sewing machine.

So do I have to out the cap back on the right way and switch all the wires around? Or pull the dizzy and and see if the shaft will fit in another way????

  2. The shaft on the Mopar flatty distributors has a flat engagement with it's drive, so it sounds like you installed it 180 off. Pull the distributor, turn the shaft 180 degrees, and reinstall. Then check your timing (2 degrees BTDC @ 500 rpm).

  5. It sounds like the Dizzy(as yiu call it) is 180 Degrees off. The the dizzy out find top dead center for number 1 cylinder then put the rotor pointingat where number 1 wire is on the rotor cap. Leave the dizzy bolt loose, but tight enough to hold the dizzy in place. Have someone try and start the engine while you move the dizzy back and forth until it starts, then use a timing light to set it to the proper degree per manual for engine.

You're 180 out with the stab of the dizzy. Pull it, turn the shaft 180, put it back in - done.
