I'm trying to find a set of plain steel wheels for my 38 plymouth. Right now it has the stock narrow 16" wheels and narrow bias wide white wall tires. I want a set of plain black 15" steel wheels that I throw a set of radials on for normal driving. I also want to be able to put on the stck chrome center cap. What year wheels should I look for? I'm going to the Syracuse Nationals Friday and I wanted to try to find a set there if possible or can I just go to a junkyard and get something? This is the look I want.........
plymouth went to 15" wheels in 1948, looks like they used the old style hubcaps on them still. Hubcap retention changed in the early-mid 50s, so you can't go very much newer than that.
Is there a newer version of wheel I could get and then use aftermarket baby moon hubcaps? I see this look on all kinds of rods but I don't know what the wheels were originally off of. I'm afraid of buying something that won't fit when I get them home and then I'm stuck with them. I was always a chevy guy and I'm still trying to learn all this mopar stuff.
Mid 80's rear drive diplomat, etc will fit, so will van wheels, provided you're still on the stock bolt pattern. Pop on some 8" moons and you're good. Option #2 is go to Coker and get a set of new15" smooties and caps. The stock mid-80's steel wheels can be hard to find... the circle trackers and trialer guys use them all up.
Thanks, I'll check the junkyard for some van wheels. I got two diplomat wheels last year and drilled the centering pin to try them out. They were too wide, it turns out they were off a diplomat police car and are wider than the normal ones.
I've got a very good set of stock 15" skinny wheels off my 52 dodge that held air with tubeless radials I'm going to be selling quick, but probably couldn't get to you by friday (without making Fed-Ex rich)
