I like the performance of the Holley 4160 600 cfm vacuum secondary with electric choke. Plus they are plentiful and they are inexpensive. I find them at U-Pull-it junk yard for $25 and on Facebook marketplace for $50. Then of course they need an ultrasonic cleaning and Chem-Dip. And I always remove the plugs and emulsion tubes from the metering block so I can clean them better for a good idle. I just discovered the emulsion tubes are available from Allstate Carburetor so I don't have to solder them up after drilling them anymore.

  2. Back in the '70s I built a '69 Camaro with a big block and had heard that Holley's were great so I got one... Don't remember the model. Don't remember having to tune it too much, but a few months later after I got it running I drove it out the driveway and smelled gas. Fuel dripping all over the intake manifold. After replacing the gaskets a couple of times in subsequent months, I swore off of Holley. I realize that the gaskets these days are better.

I chose an Edelbrock for my latest build with a 383 stroker (Street only). Got an AFR gauge, took my readings at various loads, referenced the Edelbrock charts, got some rods and orifices, and 30 minutes later I had a perfectly tuned carburetor. That was about 8 years ago. Haven't touched it since then,

Edelbrock is my vote. Excellent drivability.
