I took the $10 plunge and bought one of these self contained brake lights, made for bicycles. Small but pretty dang bright. Has it's own battery, USB charged, and a motion sensor to know when you're braking. I tried it today just on the dash of my old Blazer. It weighs nothing, could be Velcroed on and off of wherever, whenever. Seems to work, see the video. One issue though is it goes off once you stop, so won't be on while sitting at a light. It does have a bunch of options, flashing, on constant etc., all in ChinEnglish, which I'm not fluent in, maybe it can be programmed to do that. I'll report back after more use, maybe it will be of some good.

    Wow thanks for the tip.
That thing is bright. It will be perfect for my old pickup and my 38’ trailer.
    Great that there’s no wiring.

    Blowby,
I see it’s an evilbay seller but I can’t find it in his stores. Please provide the link for this light. Thx.

Cheap enough to try, for sure.

Every Hotrod should have one trouble maker.

Well, we can hope if they are well placed, it grabs attention to the car behind you. Hopefully they then notice your actual brake lights are on, even as your car stops and this/these go off.
    Heck, has to help.

Sorry to be the first negative comment…..

So every time that you ease off the accelerator, or change down, that would come on ? - yet the brake lights wouldn’t, so is that a good idea ? I don’t know.
I would expect that to not be allowed over here as it is not really a third brake light. ( probably be deemed illegal ).
The other negative thing is the USB charged lights only have x number of hours before they need recharging, so you always have to be aware of when it is due to go flat.
Let us know how it works out for you in the next few weeks.

I built a lift up lid box cover for my old F100 and incorportated a LED 3rd brake light I found that came out of a Toyota. Very slender and bright and quite well hidden.
Your idea is so much easier compared to all the trouble I went too.

That’s not a bad thing, having a light come on when you ease off. Better to have the ones behind you back off;)

Heck, I’ve followed the “brakes on/off” folks so many times, when I see it happening I just back way off.

Yes I believe it does I don't know what's inside for the motion detection, if it's adjustable, but for a bicycle it would have to come on fairly easily. I'm thinking of using it for my 11' long Bantam, which would get punted into the next county in a rear ender. The thing that intrigued me was I could stick it on for a drive and pop it right back off. I carried it around in my pocket for half a day yesterday, even forgot it was there. I don't imagine it's perfect, but for 10 bucks it's at least entertaining. Not a bad thing to keep in the glove compartment anyway for emergency use. As I said it has flashing and always on modes as well. Not to be confused with a permanently wired in light.

I've seen 1960's VW backup lights used for a third brake light by changing to a red lense, just to throw the idea out there. You could also look into a 1940's era tail light that would blend in better with the HAMB theme.

S-10 3rd brake lights, surface mount, used to be about 20 bucks on Ebay. Wide and thin.

  20. I'm still debating if I want to put a 2nd brake light on the '28.

But if you need to there are a bunch of magnetic and motorcycle helmet mount lights that are wireless and rechargeable (some take batteries) that you wire to your brake light circuit.

My challenge was always to retro wire in the third brake light without having it go apesh*t when the turn signal was activated. I solved it simply with a second stoplight switch dedicated solely to the 3BL.
