Ever drill over your head while lying on your back and those red hot metal bits fall right in the eyes? Ground straps under the body come to mind. Next time take a little paper cup and pop it on the drill bit. Catches all the metal and keeps it out of your eyes, hair and your carpet. Drilling holes for scuff plates and seat brackets thru carpet has always been a pain in the ***. Put the plate down and mark the holes with a peice of white chaulk. Heat up the ol' soldering iron and melt holes thru the carpet where you marked it. Now you can drill thru the holes without a big mess winding itself around the bit and it stops the carpet from fraying out later. Kinda simple tips but may just take some of the pain and frustration outta making holes in your project.

that might very well be the simplest but best tip I ever read, you can't imagine how many times I have had crud in my eyes drilling and the amount of carpet I can manage to wind up on a drill bit!

If I want a hole to put a sheet metal screw into I just use a sharp ice pick. no carpet burns, and no metal loss around the screw threads so the screw stays in tighter. I do that sometimes to mount mirrors too but make them BEFORE painting cuz you're sure to knock a big chunk of metalflake loose after...
If you do get metal in your eye & can't get it out go to doctor right away, pisses off the eye doctor if you wait until it rusts! Plus it hurts like hell. Voice of experience. Thank God I haven't done that in about 20 years. Full face shield is my friend!!
