Im guessing it was your float sticking close to closed and when you took the top off you released it. Now you are getting the fuel it needs to run up the RPMs. I have a couple Trips that I am running but using the 2GC carbs.
This ^^^ its definitely rich " And the next statement make no sense. Changed from 52 to 53 and it seems fine. Something is wrong in those two. Pieces of the puzzle are missing
Read all the posts fellas. After further investigation by myself and a buddy it seemed to be a fuel (or lack there of) problem. It did smell rich as stated but that was most likely from all the starting and stopping of the engine I was doing in the garage and I was probably grasping at straws. The more we observed what was going on the more it seemed to be a fuel issue. I changed the jets because I had them here and it was the "easiest thing to try first." Was the jet change the thing that cured it? Probably not. I think (Rabbid Whippet agrees w/ me) that perhaps the float was a little sticky and when I pulled the carb top to aid in the jet change it freed up. Thanks again for all of the feedback. Some of us (myself included) are not masters at this and the HAMB can be one of the best resources for knowledge and info out there.
I did read them all. Glad you got it fixed. However, float stuck closed and "definitely rich" don't go together. Neither does going up a jet size. Again I'm glad you got it fixed .
A very lean condition will make people believe that they are running rich but in fact it is a lean missfire. This lean condition is acidic g***y smelling and burns your eyes.
