Most effective methods of selling a hot rod now days

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gofaster, Jan 18, 2011.

  1. I agree with Ebay! Your car is viewed worldwide and is Sold in 7 -10 days! Word of advise start low and let the bidding wars begin....make sure you set a reserve! People with high "Buy it nows" do not seem to sell! Post some pics of the '56 here...ya never know? :)

Ebayclassifieds.com It's in direct competiton with Craigslist. It will be local to your area but it's free and you can get the experience of putting together a good add. I just had a buddy sell a truck (daily driver) on Craigslist in 15 min. I sold my Olds (1940) on Hotrodhotline and they are great folks to work with.

I think hotrodhotline.com was already mentioned. My buddy sold two of his hot rods on there. Sold them both in less than two months. One out of the city and other was out if state.

Am I the only person who's never heard of Hotrodhotline before? I was going to chime in and say I thought a couple of their employees decided to register and post a comment, but now I feel like a jerk for thinking that since it's been brought up so many times.

What's the story behind it, it looks expensive to me for a sight I've never heard of. How do they advertise the cars, it can't be through direct traffic to the site (which is honestly not that impressive) but if it really works I'd like to hear more.

I look at Hotrodhotline a couple times a week :D
I have never bought anything off it but I have a friend who has SOLD 3 cars off it in the past 3 years. I have another friend who has bought 2 cars off it.

    It is here

    http://www.hotrodhotline.com/classifieds/classifieds.php

I find the vehicle ads on eBay amusing :D
Mostly WAY OVER PRICED junk ... looking for a uneducated buyer with deep pockets. That's why they do not sell.
Same for the HAMB classifieds. Most of the stuff there is not worth the money. And most HAMBers do not want to PAY anything for a decent car.

    THAT SAID : :) :D

I have sold cars on the HAMB ( priced over 20 grand ) and a decent amount of parts. IF you have GOOD STUFF ... and are fairly priced ... it will sell.

    .
    GOOD LUCK !!
    in today's economy.

I am far from the expert and I honestly HATE selling cars for a number of reasons. In my experience, it just depends on what you are selling and how fast you need to sell it. For HAMB-friendly cars, trucks and parts, I have had a great experience on here with the exception of one nutjob (who can lurk anywhere as we know!). For a "unique" car like a race car or specialty interest car, I have had pretty good luck on Ebay although (as another poster said) be ready for some NIGHTMARES related to weirdos, crazy trade offers and often general wackiness. Of the six cars I have sold on Ebay, three of them were sold after the auction for what it is worth. As one of my buddies once said, "if you want the WORLD to see your car and find that unique buyer, go to Ebay." I agree with him for the unique stuff as I believe fewer people want to travel afar to see or ship the "standard" stuff. I have not yet tried hotrodhotline.com, but have heard good things about it. Knowing that the market was poop, I recently tried the new Goodguys Gazette classifieds (online and print come together) with a car that I thought a lot of west coast guys would appreciate although I know it obviously reaches other parts of the country and others still might like it. I was in no hurry to sell it and honestly forgot I had it on there after about 45 days (I realize that sounds crazy, but my mind is not what it once was). Low and behold, I received a phone call from a neat guy from California who wanted a traditional ride just like mine. Bingo!

I actually had good luck with ebay for a moderately priced vehicle. Hamb classifieds are good too, I sell mostly parts here though. Never sold a complete car here, but I've bought a few!

HAMB and Hotrodhotline. In March I advertised my convertible on HRHL. I placed the add on Saturday, it went live Monday and sold the very next week in a very weak market for a very good price. It targets a lot of high buck buyers and there is a lot of tri five stuff on the site.

It might have been posted before, but if you're going for the shotgun method of advertising, racingjunk.com might be worth looking into.

Anyone want to go into further detail on how the HRHL works, I.E. what it costs, what kinds/price range of cars to advertise there, ect? My curiosity is piqued now.

Here is the ad verbiage below. The site definately has more street rod type vehicles, and in my opinion is geared towards cars in the 25K range to 100K plus.

I ran an ad a few years back and did not pay extra to have the "feature" add, and as a result my add sank to the bottom quick.

If you advertise I recommend paying extra for the "feature" and several photos. HRHL has a system to manage contacts and when you set up an account you can manage it, monitor the number of hits etc. My ad had a couple thousand views in just two days, so the site does get traffic. I also listed part trade possible with specific wants and got a litany of replies with some really wierd vehicle trades...be prepared..

The HAMB is bigger than ever and cannot be discounted. It seems a lot of new members find the HAMB through the classifieds.

I want to thank everyone for their input and insight. Looks like the HAMB and hotrodhotline for starters and other options if those don't produce results.

    Thanks again guys!

Price it right. We often attach sentimental value to the price which tends to over inflate it. Be realistic and compare your car to others of the same caliber and compare what price they are asking.

i just sold my 67 427 Fairlane on ebay after the third time listing. its going to Australia and the guys already made the payment. ebay is pretty easy and you definitely get the audiance, but i agree that the market generally sucks right now.
i will definitely use the H.A.M.B. for anything pre 65 as I have had good luck with my HAMB purchases. the key is pricing....
