Yeah, no matter how much i like 32's, i'd rather have a whole car instead of a grill!!

  2. I paid $550 for mine on ePay....man I dont feel so bad anymore. It really is too bad that any and everything deuce is so much money. No one has a choice but to build one at least half brand new.

Know of two that sold in the last year for $600.00 each, private sale from a collector who makes his living knowing the value of 32-34 stuff. Not perfect but really nice.

Bought my 32 shell about 2 years ago for $100. The insert came from a vendor at Back to the Fifties. It was funny cuz I paid about twice as much for the new insert as I did for the old original shell! :)

I was at a Hi Perf Swap in Long Beach one Sunday & these guys asked me if I wanted to buy "some ol car parts" They lived in Compton so I took their # and waited a couple of weeks to go see what they indeed had. A few model A's a 427 powered 4spd steel 27 T rpu, a 34 Plymouth sedan & a 36 Ford truck.

I had just bought a bunch of stuff a few months before so I p***ed, but I turned my friend on to the 27 T, as a finders fee I spotted a 32 duece shell/insert in the peak of the garage, I asked them How much? they said they'd think about it, we paid for the T and loaded it on my trailer, next thing I know the guy brings me over a ladder and says "don't forget the grill shell," My buddy gave him $50.00 big one s for it & handed it over to me for the hook up, I was was stoked!!!!
So I guess that they're worth $50.00;) huh?
    The T got a 21 stud 39 trans & 40 rear end and a A frame. I believe that he's still working on it.
Grill is resting fine on my roadster:)

    Original..........above

Brookville...........photo taken from their website :)

The differences are so noticeable Ray Charles could see the difference...
and by most accounts....they do not fit ....
But MOST are being install on a non original radiator with a non original insert.... So who knows which part is OFF ?

I saw a repro at the NATS in Louisville that looked real good....and had the holes in the lower area...

Unfortunately the 32 thing has gotten way out of hand.....they have always been higher than most any other pre War Fords or pieces but it has gotten stupid in the past 5 years. Some folks want the real deal.... and are willing to pay for it......and others will buy " the knockoff " ( or copy of....) of the real thing. Just like ALL the Polo, Calvin Klein and Rollex repros at the flea market .... :p

Fortunately, for me, I have been a 32 Ford type of guy for over 30 years. I have bought 32 shells for $50 to $75 ...quite a few times. Back when I first went to Hershey.......you could have your pick of 32 shells for $100 and with a $1000 in your pocket, you could have bought at least 15 pretty nice ones...and I bought a FEW........ :D

This might be a dumb question, but here goes. Why does anyone pay that much for an original grill shell when you can buy the complete Brookville shell with insert, trim, etc, for less than $800?

You said you had to make the Brookville fit. What was the hangup with fit?[/QUOTE]

it works like this.hot rodders don't make sense.we drive cars with no tops in the rain,no heaters in the winter, and big motors when gas is $4.00 a gallon.and it shure feels good doing it.which would you want,a real woman or a blow up doll?most would choose the real woman.

that's the reason why we buy original parts not repo.not to mention they fit right the first time.

I got my original filled shell earlier this year, albeit missing the bottom 3", off eGay for $200+/-. The guy had it listed as a "1932 ford gill shell" without the R, so nobody could find it. Now I just need to find an insert for 1/3 the going rate.

Back in 1962, I was visiting my ex-wifes brother that lived a bit outa town on a small farm . While wandering thru the barn looking for some 6 cyl. Ford motor parts, I see this 32 shell hangin' on the wall. So I'm in total shock, but tryin' to be cool .This guy was a wheeler/dealer and I didn't wanna act too excited. Back then, really nice 32 shells were going for between $100 and $200 in Hemmings. And this one was a "10" with a scratch or 2 on it . So, I "casually" ask him if he wants to sell it. He says yeah, and he wants $2 for it. The words were hardly outa his mouth and he finds 2 one dollar bills in his hand . As I'm takin' it down off the wall, I ask him, why did you want $2 for it? And he says, with a smirk on his face, he only paid $.50 for it . WOW!! he thought he really stuck it to me!! He wasn't into 32's. He had a 48 Chev coupe with a Buick nailhead in it in another part of the barn. He and a buddy of his did a bit of local roundy round racing in previous years and totally destroyed a coupla cherry 32 3 window coupes, but that's another story........:(

Back when I was 16 I bought an orginal shell and insert, not a scratch on it for $35 bucks, now mind you that was 48 years ago. I wanted to put it on my 30 5 wend. coupe. The first thing i did was take it to a body shop and have it filled and peaked. I'd kill someone for doing that to an orginal today, but all I had seen was filled ones in hot rod mags, and I wanted to be cool. I put it on my coupe and the hood wouldn't fit, so I almost took it off. I ended up running without the hood and everyone was blown away buy the look. I never did tell anyone the look was by accident. I still laugh about it to this day, Everytime I see a 32 shell.--TV

Thanks, Duece Roadster. I can see they dropped the ball at the bottom of the shell. Brookville is pretty, it just isn't stock. Few would notice, but it'd bug me every time I looked at it. I don't know if I'd be bothered much if the price is too high, though! Do you know anything about the Vintique grills someone mentioned? I couldn't find a pic anywhere. Their site is under construction, so no help there. The Brookville shell looks like it is concave at the bottom, as opposed to convex. Is that right? I can't really tell what the other differences are from the pics.

You know it brutha. I got a shell for $225 about 9 years ago, and while it's still on the wall, I'll get a repop for the car. I can't believe what guys want for '34 grilles, either! Chrissakes.
Next thing you know, guys are gonna be stealing the ones they think are "gennies" like Mercedes hood ornaments in the early 80s.

    weird.

Well Kirk...I ****in' care and since I'm not spending your money it's none of your ****in' bidnez how stupid I am.:D (I rank pretty high) I bet you've spent money on something that you like that I couldn't understand. That being said, the most I have ever paid was 300 for a cherry. The guy was building an easter egg billet mobile and bought the repro.

I wish I wasn't priced out of the compe***ion by the huge demand but I can't call anyone names because they have cash to do what I wish I could do.

No offence Kirk I just hate people that hate people for doing something that they feel p***ionate about. Obviously the parts are more important to them than the benjamins. Different strokes

The shell I saw at the Nationals in Kentucky that looked pretty nice was the Vintque. It had the holes in the lower area and a opening for the radiator fill cap.....like the original Ford ones....

The holes lacking in the repros, in the lower area, are the FIRST and most noticeable differences from the original that most folks notice. As a side note.......there are at least 3 different " ORIGINAL " styles of 32 shells......the holes are different. I have at least one of each style.

Henry Ford bought his parts from different vendors......... so that may explain the differences or it could be the early, mid year, late thing.... that Henry's 32 is so well known for.....

IF..I was building a Model A or a reproduction Deuce ( fibergl*** or steel ).......and needed a 32 shell....I would buy a repro shell and insert......But.if I was building a original Henry Ford body 1932.......I would HAVE TO have a original shell and insert....

    Deuce Roadster,

I think I'm coming around to that feeling. Mine is all original wood, etc. The frame is nice, not pitted, etc. It was a southern car. I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good grill at a price I can stand. I'm not in line for trying to set a new record for high price paid, though! The old termite delight deserves a Henry shell. I like the commercial grill it has, but I really like the p***enger shell. I have used repro stuff on things over the years due to needing unobtainium parts. Sometimes you just have to do it. It's funny how it works sometimes. A while back I was looking for something that was absolutely not in existance. So I bought repro, and reworked it to be right. Then I found someone that made a better piece, so I bought that. Then I found the best original example I have ever seen in my life, bar none. Then I found a nicely restored example for way cheap. Oh well. I guess I need to buy a ****py repop to prime the pump, eh?

I have no problem with p***ionate. I work with hot rods for a living AND it's my hobby...I know p***ionate. There's a fine line between p***ionate and stupid. The line is in a different place for everyone. In my opinion $8500 for a grille shell is way over that line.:D
