I would definitly go with either a new or factory reman (the ones like Holley sells direct for 175$). Stay away from flea market used stuff that's been modified and abused to the point of junk.

I have a Holley that I bought new in the 80's, an 1850, and it has been flawless on a 304 AMC. We've had that MTBE and now have 10% ethanol and it has had no effect. Great carb.

I have a 600 Edelbrock that is on a 283. It must have been a swap meet special cause it's been a problem for 3 years. I got it pretty good, but still needs more. The Edelbrock tuning guide and user's manual is really good and availible online. It can help diagnose the issues. But if you bought a factory fresh one, I'd bet that it's good to go right out of the box.

So either carb is gonna be good. I prefer the look of the Holley, myself.

Electric chokes are great. Unless you live in a moderate climate where no choke is appropriate. Make sure you get a 12V line off the ignition switch. Not the coil feed.

  3. If you love to tinker , get a Holley. I had a 570 cfm (Street Avenger series)on my 0.30 over 283. Took awhile to get it just right but after that, ran flawless. I took off the electric choke and put on a manual choke to help with early morning start ups.
