New owner of a '37 Ford Slantback Streetrod (you've all seen before at some time or another here) which has a Motor City Flathead with Offenhaeuser Heads & Intake, Mallory points distributor, Holley 390 4B, Tremec T-5 trans. While I have a plethora of information on the car I have been unable to find the specs on the Motor City 59(A) engine - cam lift/duration, bored and if so what pistons, stroked, typical hp (assume ~175-200), etc. Am aware of what many flatheads were hopped-up to be back in the day and have owned STOCK 59s and 59ABs, but cannot find the typical specs for a Motor City (if they exist - perhaps each was unique - ?). I've an 88 year old colleague who visited their original location multiple times but he only has a superficial memory of the typical specs for their builds. If anyone has thoughts / info on this I'd greatly appreciate it. Google searches have yet to produce the info thus far. Original build on the resto/custom rod and engine both have ~4,300 miles on them. Runs well and strong - met the bill as I was looking for a 'get in and drive it', not a project. Prior owner was/is a great steward of the car - only needs tweaking to now my personal preferences. Thanks in advance - SH
I am****uming you are referring to the Motor City Flathead that was owned by Mark Kirby? To the best of my knowledge all of his engines were custom built to the owners specs. He probably had a preferred or favorite cam grind, but my guess is lots of different profiles were used, especially as he was known to always be tinkering and looking for an extra bit of performance. Your best bet is to pull a head, put a degree wheel on the front and measure lift at the valve with a dial indicator.
