I have a Chevy 350 engine in my fiberglass 32 Ford now. Thinking about moving up to a big block Chevy. Will the motor mounts welded to the frame now, match up with the big block or will they need to be moved? From what I have been told I will need to move the radiator up an inch or so forward for clearance but any other changes?
From what I have read the BBC will sit on the SBC mounts with the same relationship between the trans mount and the side mounts. I think the BBC is much more than an inch longer! I found a site which lists the lengths and it looks like the BBC is 4 or 5 inches longer! I have a friend with a '32 BBC and I know he had to have a longer hood made.
Part of the "beauty" of the Chevy family of engines is the interchangability made possible by having the engine mount and rear block face measurement apply to all the V8s, so the only "change" is the front overhang. It may even apply to the 4.3 V6 as well as the 230-250 L6s?
Thanks for the info. Since I am running an open hood 32 I won't have to worry about the hood fitting. I just have to worry about moving the radiator and grill up a few inches. I was hoping I would not have to mess with cutting off the motor mounts (welded to the frame) and relocate them. Happy to hear I should have have to mess with that or the transmission/driveline.
The 4.3 V6 is about 4.1 inches shorter than a SBC and the side mount is back by that much. The straight 6s have a different mounting system.
