This may be a foolish question but here goes anyway.. I am working on a 31 ford and will be putting in a 5.0 that came out of 86 T-bird, question is are the motor mounts the same for the early 302 engines and the later models? It would be easier to maneuver a block around than the complete engine so am thinking about getting one that is already torn down. I am not going to rebuild the complete one that I have before installing it. Thanks, Kerwin
The blocks are the same....early or new. The mounts are different depending on the car you source from.
Yep, and being Ford, there is a large number of different mounts that they used throughout the years. If you want to look around, they started the small block (221) in 1962 in the Fairlane and used the 302 in the Explorers until '99, I believe. www.rockauto.com is a good source - they have photos of the parts. Example - motor mount for a 302 in a '69 Mustang: <IMG style="MAX-WIDTH: 300px; ; WIDTH: expression(this.width > 300? 300: true ); MAX-HEIGHT: 400px; ; HEIGHT: expression(this.height > 400? 400: true )" src="http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=314925&imageurl=http%3A//info.rockauto.com/Anchor/2257.jpg"> Malcolm
Just want to make sure if I get another block to set up the mounts in the frame I am good to go and don't need to use the complete engine. Thanks for the info
that some thing i've been wondering about too. i got the wife a 63 fairlane wagon with a 260 and i found a 80's 5.0. so i should be able to use the 80's motor side and the 63 frame side? yes/no
302 should bolt right on the 260 motor side and frame side mounts, the bell housing pattern is 6 bolt on 302 and 5 bolt on 260 though.
Right on. The big change was in 65. The single bolt was pre 66 and the cradle was late 66 an up. Another alternative is RMP adjustable motor mounts. I had a time with shearing those stock mounts at the drags. Hell even normal launches would tear them in half. So I installed the RMP adjustables. At $225 it was a bargain...unless you like changing mounts out. This setups allows adjustment for engine to drive line anxles. Plus when you launch That baby goes straight! If cost scares you...just remember the original was a single bolt mount. Those frame to engine brackets will not work with the 66 and up cradle frame to engine brackets. Sourcing them with a junk car can be cheap or expensive if you go thruy a aftermarket dealer such as NPD. The cost was a few dollars more for the RMP...and they don't brake.
second that just put a set of rpm mounts in a off topic car i own made installation a breeze and theyr'e super stout also
On my 37 I used flat plate mounts and frame mounts for rubber donuts from Ch***is Engineering to fit a 1991 5.0. Probably not as pretty, but workable. The driver's side plate had to be milled 1/4" or so to clearance the headers. Gary
I did the exact same thing in a 32 Ford with a 289.Never had any problem with it.Simple ,cheap and quick.
the tranz bit i knew and i'm actually geting both the motor and trans so i'll need to work on the trany mount and have the drive shaft shortend
