I learned something the hard way. Oil dilution is a fact! My truck would stall when engine speed lowered to idle. I though*** was an ignition problem but turned out to be a vacuum leak in the carb body.Meanwhile I cranked the motor many times over many hours. Finally discovered the leak and idle problem solved. Driving to work a few days later something broke causing a clattery hammering.as I gently pulled away from a stop sign. Was able to nurse it home. Inspection showed no holes in the block. And then I realized I must have pumped a huge amount of raw gas into it completely washing away all the oil. Correction: original minor problem exchanged for new major problem. And there it sits. What is the most likely injured componant? I think it's a spun rod bearing or something rod related.
Sounds like you've done in a rod bearing. Only waty to tell for sure is to drop the pan for a look. jerry
Maybe I'm overlooking something, but I don't see how a vacuum leak will put a significant amount of gasoline into the oil. Unless the carb body was cracked between the fuel bowl and some vacuum cavity. Does the oil smell like gasoline? Is the oil diluted (thinned by gas)? What did your oil pressure gauge/warning light indicate when you heard the noise? Before you drop the pan, I'd drain the oil and check for any for metal sediment in the drain pan. Remove the oil filter, cut it open (tin snips or air chisel, NOT hacksaw) and see what is on the outside of the paper element. If you see metal (especially soft metal [lead] flakes from bearings), then there's major trouble. What engine (make/displacement) has this problem?
The va***m leak was located where the upper and lower sections of the carburetor join. This created a vac*** leak that prevented the motor from idleing. It would start and then die. Repeat that a hundred or more times and you have washed a lot of raw gas into the motor to drain into the crankcase. After bringing the truck home I checked the oil and indeed it was very diluted. Vehicle is 1957 Dodge D-100 pickup. Engine is 315 Polyhead V8.
