i have a 38 ford truck that i am building. i have chopped the cab, am building a frame and bed, running an old grill shell of some sorts and here is my question.... i am trying to decide between 2 options.... first one is a 400 pontiac motor and ****** out of a 69 firebird. my other option is a ford straight six and manual ******. cant decide between tire fry'in motor or gas mileage and out of the ordinary six cyl. Please give me your oppinion...... thanks
gear it properly, and have both power and mileage. either tall gears and the firebird (th400) or use a 200-4r or 700-r4 whichever you can get with a bop pattern and a more fun 3.50 gear.
Go with the pontiac ,The firebird motor will scream .Probably the 335 horse power one .Believe me I know.
Well, 1st off , welcome to the HAMB and second, you have to decide which of the two will make you happy and go from there. The truck won't be that heavy so maybe the 400 wouldn't guzzle real bad if you keep your foot out of the oil pan. On the other hand, if the 6 cyl. is the 300 Ford you can still have a bunch of fun and good good mpg as well as being able to get some hop up goodies. I don't like giving opinions but I think I'd go the 6 if it's a good one
I've found the 300 ford 6 will use as much gas as a good running 400 Poncho engine and the Pontiac is a LOT more fun! Discalimer: The previous post comes from a registered Pontiac fanatic..and a guy who maintained a fleet of ford pickups with 300 ford 6 engines for many years.
