I saw a really neat item several years ago and I wonder if any HAMBer's know how to build one. It has a temp and oil pressure guage and an ignition switch and just a few wires to hook up to start and moniter a motor early in a build. It would be a great tool for the builder. If it's in the tech section I could not find it. thanks
if you just want to run the motor and nothing else, not of wires would be needed..the alternator would not even need to be hooked up mechanical gauges would be even easier you would need a battery with the negative grounded to the block , and the positive going to the starter solenoid..both being #1 or 2 cable from that connection on the starter solenoid , i'd run a #10 up to the ignition switch and hook it to where it says battery on it. run a 14 gauge wire from the starter post on the igintion switch to the post on the starter solenoid to activate it. if you have a neutral safety switch , wire that inline...if not be real carfull and make sure the tranny is in neurtal before you fire it up also run a 14 gauge wire from the ign post on the ignition switch to your coil...install a ballast resister inline if you are using points. on a sbc there is also a bypass wire around the resistor for starting, but you really wouldn't need to do that..it will start without it if you have electric gauges, run a 16 gauge wire with from the accessory post of the ignition switch to the gauges power post...run a ground wire to engine ground for each...and also a 16 gauge wire from their sender post to the appropiate sender in the engine if you want the alternator good be wired in too.....that wiring depends on what you have: internal /external regulator...one wire or three. but you don't need it to run
I used an ignition switch and wired it like the diagram to start the engine and run in the cam. I added a mechanical oil press gauge and a temp gauge to monitor the engine with.
