I am working on recurving a Ford Motorcraft distributor. While I am working on it I thought it would be a good idea to lube the distributor shaft and under the advance weights. Does anyone know what lubricant I should use? Any recommendations or suggestions would be much appreciated.

The old Ford point type distributor used motor oil. The weights were lubed by a wick under the rotor. You were supposed to put a drop of oil on it when you did a tune-up.

Older distributors had and external oil tube with a flip cap , later went as Jaracer stated , lube under the rotor , then latest no lube . Which ever you had a few drops of engine oil a couple times a year and it will out last us .

Some of the old tune up sets came with the small capsule of lube to lube the rubbing block on the points.

I’ve been using a synthetic multipurpose grease called ‘superlube’ it’s clear and available at Wally World,. I started using it on rifles and now use it any place I need too..

When I was in tech school, our Carb and Ignition instructor told us to buy a tube of Delco distributor cam lube for the point rubbing block. He said a tube would last you a lifetime. I still have about 95% of that tube left.

I would not put any oil based lube under the weights, all it will do is attract dirt. I use some Teflon spray that dries and dirt does not stick to it.
