i know i'm might be straying a bit on this post but hey it's for a 1960 panhead in a rigid frame so it meets the old criteria.I want to convert to a belt final drive i plan on using the sportster rear pulley and belt.I have a late model rear wheel so that end is no problem. At the trans end the sportster pulley of course has a lot finer splines in the center then the old harley trans shaft which has like maybe 8 wide splines on it.I gopher for a very competent machinist with a fully equipped machine shop so he does my fabbing for free. What do the techy people of this bunch think the best way to go about putting the descibed pulley on the described shaft?
Do some research, you can buy the front pulley for the shaft with the larger splines. I am not a HD man, but I have a friend that did the exact same thing and just bought it from I think(I may be wrong) J & P.
what frame do you have? is it wide enough to fit a belt? i know paughco sells a frame to run a 180 with a chain or a stock size tire and a belt. a softail belt is too long for that setup but karata has a final belt system for a 4-speed swingarm set up that is just the right length. i'm pretty sure that's what indian larry ran on his early bikes. you can buy just the pulley to match the 4-speed spline. and later on, i can count the teeth of the belt i have out in the garage if that would be any help to you.
thanks for the offer Silent Rick but no need to count the teeth for me.That can be tedious can't it If i go belt i'll use the sporster belt as it's narrow,i believe 1 1/4" wide.Anyway Choprods hooked me up on fabbing the front pulley for nothing, nice to have friends with talent.Of course he might make me rearrange all his parts or something for the favor.I'm going to make the 10 mile trek to his house soon and talk him into loaning me his parts for the day to see if it's feasible with my frame.I've got an old single down loop frame so won't be changing that just for the sake of a belt final.
