i'll sell you my pinner cheap! here is the result of deciding to ignore a loose chain till after i crossed a mountian pass, several times...long story, but after checking on it when it was just starting to touch the tire, decided to wait 20 miles, over the pass and tighten it when we stop to eat, a lot of stuff happened in that 20 miles and carved the tell tale pattern you see here. but it was a good ride!

or you can get new ones from J&P cycles

  11. This is my 1943 WLA 45. not a bobber, but when
i take off the rear rack, and front mudgard then
it looks cool. Just like it was bought in 46, and
used with out a repaint. [IMG] Mark.

Picked this up last year. It was barn (garage) fresh. Built in the 70's and stored for many years. updated the electrics and new plugs...started with a kick.

Shipped it to Texas and haven't heard anything since.

I forget right now whos bike it is, but any more pics of the frame with it molded in under the seat springs? That is a nice touch.

I don't give a damn about hippy long bike crap, I just don't understand how something as universally common in America as a stock FL with apes would qualify as some specific regional or period thing. Or was that a joke I just didn't get? Anyway, it's a nice stock FL with apes.

TWO,i was jokingly saying what i said in my first post,
but at the same time at least in my area where i grew up all lot of biker dudes i knew from the vagos and mongols rode this style,(pans, shovels, apes, chromed out, some times 21" wheel in front, cool paint,)thats what i was refering to.

im was just a kid,im going by what i remember,,

Dan,its a '73 mostly stock except for the apes, kandy metalflake paint and chrome..

Butt , a friend of mine who used to work at a bike shop down here called Dago Choppers rides around on a bike almost identical to that one only it is blue & white . Same seat , bars , everything . I know what you are saying though . Alot of the outlaw bike guys down here rode around on bikes like that . Closer to the border there are a bunch of mexican dudes who roll around on the same style as that too . Funny you nailed the era pretty good . There werent too many " outlaw " types riding around on long bikes down here in San Diego during the late 70's 80's .

  23. Probably the handling characteristics dont ya think? Those long fork bikes are[were] scary-I noticed JJ and amer choppers staff do a lot of low speed duck walkin insted of ridin them- [IMG][ I still like looking at em tho......My homebuilder hardtail bike Im building has a stock length wide glide with 45 degree rake.

  24. Wow! Cool stuff.

Hey, does anyone have an idea of what it might cost & what would be involved in taking a late 90's Bonnie and going bobber w/ it?

I'm really not a bike guy, so how do you get em down low, where can you get the hardtail kits & do folks generally run their stock forks or something aftermarket?

    Thanks

A lot of the "outlaw" types ride FXR's because the factory pretty much nailed the handling characteristics with that package (not canyon carvers but good handling bikes none the less) a bike can be raked and extended and still handle well if the proper geometry is adhered to (rake, trail, etc.). If you study history you will note the different style that were popular no matter who was riding them (even the "outlaws" went through their stretched out phase). Anyhow, I think there are very cool examples from every era / style.
Keep the pics coming, neat stuff!!
Butt - how tall are those apes??

  26. Can you guys esplain something to me?

What is some of the terminology when you're talking about bikes... like percent of rake... stretch etc.
Like where, how much... how much are stock bikes... how far do they go...
    Thank you'all,
    Sam.

    Sam-
I think Christian posted an address awhile ago about a site that had lots of info. about rake, trail, stretch, etc. If you can't find it I could probably dig some stuff up for you. Also Sam, could you PM or email me, I have some questions about school stuff-
Back to the "bobber" topic, Ironworks magazine did an article this summer about the history of "California" bobbers - maybe you could look up their website for more bobber info - don't know if the story is on their or not??
