@D.Lee, My wife, who turned 82 yesterday, was going through her nightstand this morning and found the picture I've been looking for. I paid $125 in 1965 for this '52 Pan just like it is in the pic, title included. Suicide clutch, jockey shift, 3.00 x 21 Avon, factory XA forks that are 2 1/2 inches longer than regular forks, Sportster tank, Lime green with metal flake the size of your thumbnail. One side of the sissy bar broke so I hacksawed the other side. License plate was held on with 2 inch screws. I dumped the clutch coming off a stop light one night and she slid back into the screws. She's had an extra set of dimples on her butt since then.
Man it doesn’t get any better ! My Buddy is rebuilding his 47 Knuckle . He paid $200.00 , rode it through the teenage years , put it away . He is 69 now , $5800.00 to rebuild the engine ! These old Harley’s are as much America as are our hot rods are . Keep them alive and well , even if you never ride again , it makes a very pleasing day do nothing but sit and remember the fun we had on them . Thanks for the memories , be safe
Scored a nice old bike today. Plan on cleaning it up and making it mechanically sound. Picture of the PO said he road it into the shed some 25 years ago.
Hello, Recently, So Cal and all of the Westcoast has received its winter share of being cold and rainy. My wife and I were outside in the car braving the “downpour week” of cold weather. But there was a blue sky break during a cloudy portion of the weather. So, we decided to venture outside for the first time in a week. It was a nice, sunny, and dry beginning up the coast. The clouds were headed for the inland areas and it looked safe at the time. Within several miles, the storm clouds moved around and it was headed our way. We know we are at the bottom of a big “comma” shaped storm system, they usually whip by us, headed inland and East. This time, it sounded like a million BBs were coming down on our car. It was hailing on the Coast Highway and covered our car when we stopped for a red light. We did not dare go outside and enjoy the hail. But for several miles along the coast shoreline, we were still pelted with more hail. It was a good thing we were not in Texas... Ha! It was the coldest day in many months and the rest of the area got their share of cold snow, blowing winds and tons of rain, take your pick, all up and down California. Yes, the waves were huge and stormy. On the day that we all gathered at this cold winter photo shoot in So Cal, it was jacket and gloves weather. It was so clear, but freezing cold to this coastal beach lifestyle 20 something guy. The clarity of the day was outstanding for photos. But, the closeness to the snow covered mountains and the biting, cold wind that shot up this sloping plateau area was really something. It was hard to shoot with bare fingers... Yes, I have been in a wetsuit in the middle of winter, on a crystal clear, freezing weather up in Santa Barbara. But, at least we had on our warm winter wetsuits to prevent any frozen body parts from falling off… But, this day was a sunny morning that was so cold that I could not use my gloves, so my fingers were hunting for any warmth around. Luckily, the photos were taken in a second or less and then the hands went back inside of a warm jacket pocket. Jnaki Part of the whole day photo shoot were other hot rods and a custom motorcycle. The motorcycle was lightweight, had all of the custom accessories and build techniques. It was able to be picked up by two people and put on a low walled ledge of the cliffside plateau. It was one of the best locations for a photo, due to not having anything in the background, (other than the snowy mountain tops several miles away), to detract from the custom motorcycle. YRMV
R 50 or R 60? Either one a sweet ride. If it's not to late lubricate and exorcise the rear fender hinge or it will rust solid. A side stand is a useful accessory. Change motor oil frequently. You might want to consider cleaning the oil slinger which means an engine tear down. The exhaust pipe flange steel nut can gall on the aluminum exhaust port thread. Nice solo setup with that seat, tank and bars. I bought my 1964 R 60 in 1976 and sold it in 2022. Breakwell & Green stainless exhaust. Harro Elefantan Boy tank sack. Tapered steering head bearings. Small dual seat. Sport tank. Smooooth and quite performance.
I got this ‘59 FLH, when I was 17. She was a hefty old girl, definitely to big for my ability. Enjoyed riding her , though…
Thanks for the info nice R60 Mines a 66 R50 I got the exhaust all off thank goodness the threads are good. All needs replaced the rear fender still has a good hinge. Going to change all the fluids and pull the oil pan and clean the pump pickup. Been reading about the oil slingers sound like it needs done just hate to take the motor down. Once I get it running I will determine what condition it’s in. Thanks Ron
