I just wanted to run this by everyone and see if I'm on the right track. I've set up lots of engine/teans combos in various applications, but this one is a little different and I'm sure I'm over-thinking it. Anyways, on to the project: I'm mounting a 348 Chevy in a '32 frame. Originally, I was planning on using a Hurst style front mount and bellhousing mounts, since the '57 Chev teans I'm using has no mount pad on the tailshaft. Unfortunately, my '59 348 has no accessory holes drilled in the front of the block to bolt the front cradle to. If I use the factory side mounts, along with the bellhousing mounts, would I be putting any undue stress on the block? The side mounts are pretty far forward, so I think it would probably be fine, but I'm not 100% confident in it. Will it be supported well enough?? Other options would be to drill the block for front mount holes (the bosses are there, just not drilled) or find a lower tailshaft housing with a pad for a mount, but that might also require a matching output shaft since I know there were multiple lengths over the years for those 318 three speeds... Like I said, probably over-thinking it, but better to ask now, ya know.
The side mounts should be fine. The engine will in essence be supported on 4 points. It should support the engine better than the 3 point mounting that the transmission mount would provide.
I started out with side mounts on my '29, but the steering box got in the way. So I fabbed a front mount, along with bellhousing mounts . The trans will rest on the mount, but the bolts won't be tight.
